  1. I am looking for a rear seat bottom for a 71 Fastback, don't need the seat back, just the bottom. Vermillion color would be optimal but I realize that might be wishful thinking! Thanks, Dave rutter459@aol.com
  2. Where do I find the vin #'s that are stamped into the frame? What other locations should I check to verify everything matches before I start putting $ into my '71 Mach 1 project?
  3. The 460 is an '87 I believe; it's at an engine builder shop owned by a friend right now so I don't have access to the serial #. I was thinking about using aluminum heads and intake, along with headers vs cast iron ex. manifolds, in order to keep the weight down. I don't really have sports car handling expectations; the goal would be a street driven car that would accelerate like crazy and be somewhat civilized. We're using a c6 auto trans so I'd like it to idle reasonably well. As I don't know the condition of the internals other than it ran and has about 80k miles on it, I'm planning on a full rebuild. I like the idea of using big displacement to achieve big low end torque ; that's what is most useable on the street in my experience.
  4. My son and I have started a restoration of a 71 Mach 1. Car currently has a non-running 351C with an Fmx trans from a 1969 Cougar; we have the original 351C in pieces also. We acquired a running 460 with a c6 automatic and are planning to use that, with a mild build; 500 hp is our goal. We'll probably sell off the 351's. I am seeking advice on doing this swap- what's needed, etc, as well as thoughts on what parts to look for for the 460 - aluminum heads, intake, cam, exhaust. Any advice and direction will be appreciated!
  5. How do you hook up the speedo - I presume the original speedo works off a cable drive and the new one is electronic?

  7. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. We've been looking through all the posts; it certainly seems this site is a trove of knowledge! Our first step was to invite a local restoration shop owner by to look the car over before we start any hard ( expensive) work; he confirmed that we have a sound car to start with - no rust, solid underpinnings. We're going to take it apart first, then start from the suspension and wiring and work through powertrain, dash and interior and then cosmetics. We look forward to picking your combined brains and taking advantage of the fact that you've all done most of this before!
  8. My 13 year old son and I have recently acquired a 1971 Mach 1 project car. All metal work done, mediocre paint, some interior work done. Will need lots of work, but have 3 years to do it! Plan is to make it a mild custom styled after road racers Of that era. Got two engines with the car - both 351C 's; one is original in pieces, the other (in car now) is supposedly a '69 Cougar engine. Has Fmx trans, open to swapping for stick or?. Would like 400 plus horsepower, but goal is to be streetable. Will need new hood; probably convert to Ram Air. Has drum brakes now, would like at least front disk brakes. We're located in the Chicago suburbs. We'll do some of the work ourselves, but will need to farm out some also. Any direction as to parts sources, local service expertise, etc will be much apprciated!
