  1. What a beautiful engine bay. One of best I’ve ever seen.😊👍
  2. Time to catch up on my 71 Mach 351-c 2v. I removed the edlebrock manifold and carb went back to factory intake with 2 barrel Holley.
I installed a cam and lifters first time for me. Cam is rated idle to 4000 on the specs. I was just trying for something close to a factory cam. Hope I got it.

Cutting ahead still was having problem with going dead. Decided to install the Petronix and coil. The magnetic pickup would not fit. Petronix cs said aftermarket lobe to big. Got an autolite from npd car runs great with that dizzy. Either cam made the aftermarket bad or wrong dizzy.

I still ain’t there yet. I can drive everywhere as long as I run under 70 mph. When I go fast really mash the gas she dies. I’ve adjusted float started high and went down till I now flip on the electric pump and that lets me keep going.

Going to bring float back up a little I’m right there. Also the two idle screws function correctly as in kill the engine.

Any ideas the gas is good the electric good new dizzy, regulator, capacitor, alternator isn’t new reads correct.

Can the bottom of the engine be worn causing this? What about the heads can they do this? Thanks in advance

ps right knee replacement Monday in case I don’t get back soon.

Simple matter of lean. Like uncle Tony says” you don’t know what you’re getting”.

My engine has been modified and made strong. When I put a factory manifold and a two barrel 500 cam Holley, she just couldn’t get enough gas. Upsizing the jets is doing the trick.👍

My Mustang is running good, actually I’ve about turned it into a daily driver. I had bought a Petronix ignition and when I went to install it wouldn’t fit. The aftermarket dist had too large lobes. I bought a dist from NPD and got an autolite. That dist fixed my dying and cutting out. It appeared there was about 8 to 10 degrees difference in the distbutors. Wrong part or I damaged the aftermarket.
If I can figure out the process I’ll add a photo.

  3. Coil is reading 10v during operation. I have replaced once and will be replacing again when I go to petronix. I will soak the wheel in oil.
  4. Got my knee and couldn’t be happier. I can walk instead of waddling. Dr. Sharp is one that uses the robot computer guided system. Make sure ur doctor uses that system. I wish the Mustang was doing as good as me. Replaced cam, lifters, intake, carb, harmonic balancer, water pump, ps pump, new fan, and installed shroud. Installed new temp sender and touched up the connections for oil, temp, and coil. I enjoy wiring. Still got same problem running at 2000rpm to break in cam after 15 minutes started sputtering and died. Also the heat gauge was close to full deflection. Called it a day. Now this dying stuff is crazy. One thing I’ve done is beat on the steering wheel with a rubber hammer. Maybe I have damaged the ignition. The wheel is mounted 90 degree off and one side is stripped out. I’ve bent my puller and now plan on trying to weld to one side so I can pull it off. Open to ideas steering wheels are supposed to come off. I’ve talked to much any help or ideas greatly appreciated.
  5. 69 Rustang I wonder how it got bent also. The lifter had no movement at all when I cycled the engine using the switch. Maybe all that backfiring when the distributor was bad?
  6. Will do so far so good make sure they do ct scan prior and they use the computer guided machine that maps it out so the cut is as small as possible.
  7. I’ll get back on it soon as I can. Knee replacement this past Monday might be out of garage awhile. Thanks for y’all’s input.
  8. Hey y'all removed intake found a bent rod. Further inspection one lifter(bent rod one) no up and down movement. Extremely worn lifter. That's where I'm at now. Going be first time installing a cam.
  9. I have used a fuel regulator on edlebrock. They seem to flood out when you don't have one. I will check electrical there is a white substance that keeps showing up under the regulator(voltage). I have a new battery so I replacevoltage reg and capacitor. Also the dist is new but I'll check the ground as make sure on coil as well. Thanks for input.
  10. 351 Cleveland edlebrock carb Mr. Gasket regulator. New fuel system gas tank to carb. Got trash at the gas station. still having trouble cleaned carb, changed filter, seems to still have spell of missing like trash. Filter looks clean. Could regulator be my problem have seen poor talk on Mr. Gasket brand. Timing can't be set precise as balancer doesn't read correct. Starts with easy touch off runs good to what seems like trash coming through. I ain't missing nothing am I?
  11. I'm enjoying this site. I have already received some very informative tips. I'm on my 8th Mustang, I bought my first one in 1975. I didn't know how to do anything back in those days except drive. Over the years I've taught myself a lot. I've had a 73 Mach, 71 coupe, 69 fastback, 72 coupe, 70 coupe, 73 fastback, 70 grande, and now 71 Mach 1. My 70 coupe I owned 34 years and 9 months. It was a 351 c with a three speed competion orange. It had electric seat locks I sold it back to the original owners family. I must confess the 71-73 are the best to me. They are just the coolest, best looking cars ever made. Now that I've got this 71 Mach I've got what I really wanted.

Don that's how I made my mark. I made sure piston 1 was on compression distributor at one and marked the dampener. Replacing the dampener is on the list. Thanks for the reply👍

I have never built an engine. What I would like to know is how does tdc get moved on the dampener. What I mean is on my car the engine a 351 c 71my which has been rebuilt and strengthened tdc doesnt line up with the #1 piston and the distributor. The dampener looks original and kind of ratty. Some of the rubber has fell out of it. I just drew me a new tdc but it’s on the other side of the dampener from the factory tdc. So has that dampener moved or can you build an engine with an upgraded cam that makes the tdc read different. Also the time is coming I’m gonna build an engine. Thanks in advance.

    Smog filter

Thanks I'll look to see if I can find a bracket. At least I know the setup. I guess I'm lucky the canister is even there. Thanks again👍

    Smog filter

1971 Mustang Mach 1 and I have the charcoal filter(?) just hanging on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Am I missing a bracket I can't see how to attach it and make it stationary.
  16. Stanglover I really enjoyed reading your post. Lot of good info there👍
  17. On my fuel system the line itself was bad. I did new tank new sender new pump but couldn't get gas. I then added a electric pump back at the tank and it got gas and ran. I could spray cleaner through the line when off the car and the cleaner came through. I then pulled the big steel line again and replaced with aluminum tubing and that fixed it. That old line must have been corroded inside. Now gas flows good fills up filter fast with just the stock mech. Pump and I had to put a regulator on it since I'm running a new edlebrock carb.

She Is licensed and on the street. Thanks Kilgon I came back in and reread your post. The new distributor was a notch off. It would idle great then die in gear. So I moved a notch ccs and started spinning tires. Never had a bad distributor before. Would sit there and go up and down barely running like only 4 cyclinders were working.
  19. Tommyt

Finally. Bad distributor. Learned all about pulling the cover and checking timing chain. Can’t see anything wrong visually with the distributor but the new one fixed it right up.😀
  20. Tommyt

I did pull the valve covers and every cylinder was functioning. The one before me has been trying to get it to run for 3 years. Good chance something assembled incorrect, or maybe oil without zinc has been used.

Update- all the easy ones eliminated. I have her at a shop. We got it running but it’s up and down like half the cylinders are working. Mechanic thinks maybe timing chain incorrect.
  22. Tommyt

Timing is direction I’m going thanks for all the replies I’ll add posts as I go. Great to have this site. To the guy in Michigan your red Mach is super sharp. I have a friend with a m code 4 speed strong engine👍
