Hello Everyone,
I'm working on a 1973 mustang Mach 1 with a 351C with an automatic. I got the tilt steering fixed and yesterday replaced the power steering box and it was a two man job, because of the headers that are on the motor, and I guess my question is after replacing the box and thinking about it over night I was wondering if anyone else has headers that touch or come close to touching their steering box. The steering box and the headers are very very close to each other and I'm wondering if the headers will cause premature failure of the box with all the heat. I don't know how old the old steering box was because it was on there since I had the car and could have been the orginial one. On a side note it really changed the way the car drives with that new steering box. No more chasing the steering wheel and wondering if I'm going to go into the ditch.
Another question I have for you guys is the rag joint. I pulled the rag joint off and replaced the rubber disk with a poly joint. While replacing the joint I notice that if this was to break there is no catch built into the joint. So in other words if the joint fails you are just along for the ride which kind of makes me wonder if this joint is right or it the prior owner cobbled something together to make this work or is this the way they are. Thank you in advance for the information......
