Ok so I sold the 429/460 drivetrain & now it's time to replace it..I thought it would be cool to involve get opinions here let the members help with the motor swap. I'm trying to keep the budget right around 7k...Including the tranny..(auto) The goal here is to have a reliable powerful setup that can be cruised for hours on end (long trips) But still get up & go when needed.. I've narrowed it down to these crate motor companys. Here's all the motors I'm considering. (I have bought motors before from blueprint excellent product)

http://prestigemoto.com/351_ford_category these guys also have a 408..450hp 475tq

The blueprint motors would require intake etc. but first things first...Keep in mind the warranty too...So make your choice from the above (or if you have better options let me know) Tell the reasons why you made your choice..Also need to decide on a c-4 or c-6 So tell us which you'd choose ..appreciate any & all input..The one thing is I don't want to start with is a non crate motor..I need this baby delivered on a pallet ready to drop in ...Base motors are fine..Let the games begin :)

I would not run a 347 on the street, unless it had shorter than 5.4" rods. The 5.4" rods put the piston pin up into the oil ring groove, and it will consume oil.

The 393 is a proven combo, that will rev, and make torque. Stock 351W rods, 302 pistons, stroker crank. If you want brute torque, then I'd go for the 408. If it was an early stang with a tight engine bay, I'd understand the smaller 347. These cars have room, at least put a tall deck windsor in if you're gonna go crate engine.

I'm curious as to why you would want to stick with a C4 / C6. I would think an AOD or AODE would enhance the performance and drivability (especially on the highway). Cost would probably be about the same....

thats why I'm looking for input opinions..How does the kickdown setup work ?

whats involved with the linkage setup etc. to the carb ?

Also just checked pricing..double the price of a c4 c6 new which is what I want... no used

C4's are now available in rollerized versions. And are regularly used for drag racing. Should be one of the lightest transmissions you could find and surely one of the easiest to bolt on. The is a respected ford auto transmission group in CT that offers them. As for the mill, i dont think you can get a Cleveland crate motor, and you should consider a Cleveland in your car. Joe at DCE can build one for you in a couple weeks, and he's down the block from you.

A C-6 can waste an additional 75 horsepower in parasitic drag over a C-4. A C-4 can be built very strong, but in stock trim it is not up to the 400+ horsepower levels of the engines you are considering.

I like Totalled's advice on the engine. and agree with him. I would avoid Procomp parts that are being used in some of the engines, and iron heads are fine at that power level. All they really cost you is about 60 pounds of extra weight.

Dynamic Racing Transmissions in N.Bradford, CT makes 3 models of rollerized C4's.....the top model handles +1000HP. My tuner races super street with a C4 mated to a Cleveland with well over 500HP.

CHI 3V alum heads prepped by Jon Kaase for the Cleveland with matching alum intake, CP forged pistons/Carillo rods, lunati high rpm hyd roller lifters, Crower hyd roller cam. Off the shelf forged crank...2 weeks to build, easy 500hp and no valve adjustments. Throw on a the alum Holley street carb and you'll spend more time behind the wheel than under the hood. You will need new springs though. Dropping 200+lbs off the front end might make for more fun!

How about a custom built crate engine designed with parts to match your specific wants/needs/desires that is dyno tuned including carb tuning at competitive prices?

If that is what you are looking for this is who I would call.

I think I will take a stroll over to DCE see what kind of numbers he throws at me for a cleveland..don't hurt to ask..

Scott,

I run an AOD in my model A with a 351 Cleveland. I have a holley based carb (quickfuel) and used a Lokar kick down cable. It has worked well with lots of adjustment. They now make a valve body that does not need the accurate adjustment for pressures as mine does.

I would recommend the AOD for your use.

Any questions, contact me I will be glad to assist.

Thanks, Jay

Or a 4R70W with a controller. However, that's pricey. (like $5K.) Bu unless you are pulling the 4 series gears out of it, you're gonna want overdrive.

If it was my car, I'd stick a stockish 429 in it with a tremec, unless it was a small block car originally, or you just didn't want to deal with a big block.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No CRATE MOTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ugh.....Q...you know I have respect for you, but putting a crate motor in your Mustang is like sharing your bed with a Pam Anderson doll....sure, you can pretend for a while and have a few minutes of fun. But the doll is a POSER. Sooner, more often than later, the doll is going to run out of air. And trust me, a Pam Anderson doll lacking air is like Paris Hilton doll with air. Who want's that?

Now, I am not sure what $7k would buy you, but why not go SUPERCHARGER on a 302??? Probably fit under the hood. Not sure about the long range, but it is only a 302. Purrs. Looks stunning. Fast. Now we are talking FERGIE in the flesh.

And as far as the tranny goes, do the AOD. On the 351C forum there is Dan Jones. I am sure you heard of him. He dropped an AOD into one of his machines. I don't think it was his Pantera, but I am sure he would share his good information. Says it was the best thing he ever did, and he has done lots.

And an AOD with a 302 with a Supercharger would be perfect. Wish I would have thought of it before I built my 351c. I was too hung up on the 351c.

And, in fact, I have a 302 you can HAVE...plus shipping and handling. Just remember to put my name on the valve cover.

No. A 302 is too weenie for a 71-73. You have the under hood real estate.... use it.

*no offense intended to those 71-73 that come with a 302.... I pitty.. I mean, I understand your wanting to keep it.

:D

Guys,

LOTS of good info & opinions...It's given me more options to explore. I'm not looking to drop a ton of coin into this particular car motor wise..The q code now thats a different story..I would rather put some out of pocket coin into the sot frt coilover setup (same as the qcode) wheels tires..I do love the cleveland & went & checked out gpierce's link..the guys he got his chevy motor from have a Cleveland crate motor which is in budget & gives me a base line price for when I head over to DCE..

What do you guys think of this

James thanks for the generous offer...strict budget on this car...I gotta tell you I have done 2 crate motors in the past both with excellent results..My 71 Camaro has a 350/385 crate motor installed by the p.o the car is a pleasure to drive, reliable with plenty of go..granted I warmed it over with some new stuff but overall it's a great package..Every time I drive that car it puts a smile on my face..Thats what I need for this mustang !

Scott,

I have had two Cleveland motors completed by Joe @ DCE and have nothing but good things to say about him and his work.

Good luck with the project.

Thanks, Jay
Jay thanks for the offer on help with aod may take you up on that..Curious what type of $$$$ did you end up spending at DCE for your builds.

It would be the 347 for me, done right they are a great engine. When I was reading about the 347 a lot of guys were saying use the 5.315/5.325 short rod version instead of the 5.4, that eliminates the problem with the wrist pin and oil ring. As for the tranny do the AOD.

Just my .02 worth!

K
