January 27, 1972 (Thursday)

1.) The first home video game system, Odyssey, was introduced by Magnavox. Designed by Ralph Baer, the console could be hooked up to a television set for two players to play a tennis-like game, similar to Nolan Bushnell's game Pong.

2.) In a meeting at the office of U.S. Attorney General John N. Mitchell, G. Gordon Liddy presented the "Gemstone Plan" to Mitchell, John Dean, and Jeb Magruder. Mitchell was also the Director of the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CRP), and Liddy was CRP's chief lawyer. Liddy suggested budgeting $1,000,000 for mugging and even kidnapping "leaders of anti-Nixon demonstrations"; hiring prostitutes to solicit during the Democratic National Convention; and break-ins and installation of electronic surveillance as necessary. Mitchell rejected the plan, but retained Liddy to suggest new ideas.

3.) After hijacking Mohawk Airlines Flight 452 and landing in Poughkeepsie, New York, Heinrick Von George, a debt-ridden father of seven, was given, as demanded, a duffel bag with $200,000 in cash and a getaway car. As he prepared to drive away with his money and his hostage, Von George was killed by a shotgun blast fired by an FBI agent.

4.) Born: Mark Owen, English singer (Take That), in Oldham; Keith Wood, Irish rugby star, in Killaloe, County Clare

5.) Died: Mahalia Jackson, 60, African-American gospel singer; Richard Courant, 84, mathematician

March 1, 1973 – Black September storms the Saudi embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, resulting in the assassination of three Western hostages.

In Paris - The major world powers sign an agreement to guarantee peace in Vietnam but the ceremony was jarred by an unexpected denunciation of South Vietnam by Chinese foreign Minister Chi Peng-fei.

North Vietnam assures the United States that it intends to fully carry out the prisoner release provisions of the peace agreement, which would include freeing at least 120 more U.S. POW’s this week.

Communist officials break a tense deadlock and announce that 136 American prisoners of war and six foreign captives would be set free this weekend.

Black September Arab terrorists seize the U.S. ambassador in Khartoum, capital of the Sudan, and held him and four other diplomats hostage. Two of the diplomats were killed.

President Nixon promises that, “there will not be another devaluation” of the dollar and blamed the run on U.S. currency in foreign markets on “international speculators who make great sums of money through such activity.

Acting FBI Director L. Patrick Gray discloses that he had turned over to the White House copies of FBI investigative interviews in the Watergate case while the agency’s investigation – which touched White House aides – was under way.

Army Spec 5 Gary Guggenberger – a former prisoner of war says in an interview that one of his worst days in prison was the day he learned that Richard Nixon had been reelected president. “We knew that McGovern was gong to win and that we would be coming home. We thought Nixon was screwing up by the numbers. I thought we were dead – that we’d never last it out – after hearing that George McGovern lost.”

Mayor John Lindsay of NY says he will not seek a third term.

Speaking for all congressional democrats – Sen. William Proxmire charges President Nixon with fueling inflation, permitting excessive unemployment and allowing a further evaluation of the dollar in world trade.

Gallup - 67% of those polled oppose amnesty for draft evaders.

An amended version of the Democratic National Committee’s Watergate bugging suit is filed asking for $6.4 million in damages – twice the previous amount and adding two defendants – Jeb Stuart Magruder and Herb Porter – both officers of President Nixon’s reelection committee were added.

In New York - A criminal court judge declares the hard-core pornographic “Deep Throat” to be the “nadir of decadence” and found it “indisputably obscene by any legal measurement.”

I actually did not know the exact date the car was built until last year when she bought me an elite marti report. I knew about when it was built because I ordered it new. There was a delay and I was told at the time that they were waiting for the engine.

Speaking of "meant to be": my birthday and my Mustangs built date aren't the same but if you write them down, it's exactly the same 5 digits in the same order. :)
