I am getting ready to pull my 302 engine out of my 72 convert. It has been sitting for 6 years, going to install new headers. Duals and mufflers are surface rusted but in good shape.

Is it a stupid idea to rust blast them and repaint with high temp paint????

If you have your own blaster and want to rattle can it then give it a shot, but replacement pipes and mufflers arent that expensive right? And of course you might find holes...so then you buy new parts anyway so try it. I personally would not pay someone's labor to try to refinish exhaust parts.

You can try but I know "high temp" paint usually just flakes off/rusts on headers after a short time.

The tailpipes might be cool enough that it will last for a little while.
Yup I only mess with professionally done coatings now because of that reason. Even well prepped it always seems to flake off over time and looks as bad or worse than before. I have had really good luck with the ceramic thermal barrier coatings done professional. IE Nitroplate and others

Thank you, will probably buy a new dual system, since I am replacing my stock mainifolds with new headers. By the way, where do you live in Virginia? We may be moving to the Radford area next year.

Rattle can paint will work on well prepped tailpipes, they're cool enough for non-hitemp stuff.

Have had standard Krylon stainless steel colored spraybomb on my 5.0's tails for 2 years now, still look fine.

Rust will pop through any topcoat, it must be removed first.

Headers and midpipes (before the mufflers) are a different story. Never had luck with much lasting on them.

Hello blkulis,

This might be an option to look into. I am going to look into the internal coating for my shorty headers.

I did not know that had this-Checkout the video- It is internal coating-They recommend using this first:

Rust Remover - Eastwood Rust Dissolver

Item #16037 Rust Dissolver Brand: Eastwood

http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-s-rust-dissolver.html

Use in the inside:

Eastwood Hi-Temp Internal Exhaust Coating w/extension tube

Item #13795 Z Brand: Eastwood

Use on the outside after rust dissolve process-

Factory Gray Hi-Temp Coating Item #10395 Factory Gray Hi-Temp Coating

I have used this on 1971 Mustang-

I came back to this thread to add another option. I have dropped off my Headman headers that had the HTC coating and had began rusting to Carolina Ceramic Coatings today. Accord to Joel of Carolina Ceramic, they worked good on Unlead gasoline engines. Once they introduced Ethanol into the gas, the exhaust temperatures exceeded the limits if the HTC coating. I am looking into having the exhaust tips ceramic coated to add longevity to them.

I will post the after the ceramic coated headers are complete. I am also looking to other parts, hood hinges, hood latch, and shock tower braces ceramic coated. They should out last the car.

I have a friend with an exhaust shop and when he has tweaked his prior work on my car's exhaust he routinely takes a can of paint and paints over the welds. Just cheap rustoleum, not high temp. He feels is slows rust formation enough to be worthwhile.

Me-I'd coat em with pam and let em cook until they were seasoned :D

I painted my two tailpipes in black with hightemp paint, before this were sand blasted, since 2 years look still ok.
