Here's the COTM thread with the quick story: http://www.7173mustangs.com/thread-november-2012-cotm-1971-mach-1-in-west-texas-frankenstang?pid=95567

All of that's been fixed, of course. ;)

Eric,

I went back and read the COTM story and looked through all the pics. Incredible job and transformation...still find it hard to believe someone would try and restore one in this bad of shape....glad you did though!

Thanks Jeff! Appreciate the kind words.

Being far out in 'Middle-of-Nowhere West Texas,' kind of poses certain limitations (as in, not a lot of inventory to choose from). Not to mention when I found mine, it seriously did not initially look as bad

as it really turned out to be (like peeling back the layers of an old onion to find the bad parts in the middle).

I can say for certain that I will not be tackling a project to this level ever again. Even though the things I've done so far have been lots of fun (all in their own ways), it's just a little too much for someone that actually intends to enjoy their project someday - the 3 years I've spent so far just getting it back to the current state has worn down some of my motivation... and that's a bad thing because the 'tough part' is pretty much done: now it's just about making it shiny and putting stuff back together with new parts. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything - I've learned a TON, and made a bunch of great friends (mostly through this site) in the process... but if there's a 'next car project,' it'll have a much better starting point.

Having said that, 'everything is restorable,' in my opinion. If I can do it, anyone can. ;)

72hcode...

Those are some great pics! The one with the tree growing out of the engine compartment is a true classic. That tree is pretty big too so has been there a while.

Eric - Truely a fantastic job and my hat off to you sir, to take on such a monumental project and bring a car like that back to life is amazing. I have alot of respect for members who take on such jobs and have the dedication to follow them through as it is a daunting task to undertake.

the first car I thought of was Eric's.

and its amazing how he saved this car, when others would have just junked it.

I can just see the "Before and After" photo album you will have.

Heres a couple of pics of the 72 convertible i bought for parts. It literally broke in half. we had to load it with a front loader on a tractor. My 10,000lb winch was just ripping it apart dragging it on trailer.

Not most but here are a few of mine. YES it would have been cheaper to buy one in better shape, but it would not have been MINE. Besides except for the actual painting and panel replacement, labor has costed me $0.

Believe it or not the motor, trans, and rearend were in good shape. only 80000 miles I pulled the motor and fired it up on the floor of the garage. I posted a video of it on here somehwere... I mainly wanted the care for the power disc brakes up front. Motor was 351C, c6 i believe and 9 inch rear. made some good money off that car.

Agreed. Eric needs a spray bottle and needs to make a label that says something like "Magical Rust Remover and Metal Regenerator"

Put plain water in a spray bottle. Under instructions put "will only work with ACTIVATOR, aka "ERIC". :D

When he is at the shows and people ask how, he can just point to the bottle (spray bottle LOL). Hide the other bottle of JB!

Nice one Don.. LOL

BTW PM me on how you added the like button there.
That took a lot of copy paste-ing to figure out but anyone on here has the same ability. Therefore it is not cheating. hehe

Click if you like these cars but glad they aren't yours.
