1971 Mach 1, Grabber Blue w/Argent stripes. Original 2V 351C Auto, Tilt, rear defog, Black Comfortweave Interior. Under restoration. Original colors, 4V 351C, 4-Speed, Spoilers, Magnums, Ram Air. All Ford parts.
I have a question about Belt line felts for my car. See the picture below. When did Ford use the wide felt parts versus the narrow ones. Does anyone sell the wide ones? Were the wide ones used on power window cars for extra support? Please help!

Next Question: Who has the best quality belt line felt kits for a fastback?

my original ones were the wide ones, but I could not find new wide ones, so I installed the small ones, seems to work just fine.

Hello kcmash,

I would prefer the wider ones. I have a good friend who has a set of NOS wide band weather strips. They are nice!! They are next to impossible to find a NOS pair. I believe they provide better wiping when you roll up or down your windows.

So far, the products that I have used have NOT held up very well. After a few years in the elements, they start to dry rot and dry out with cracks. The narrow ones will work as stated by imusa76, but their longevity I have issues with. I have two pairs of the wide band weather strips that are some 38 years old that look better than the new ones after two years on the mustang. I hope they have gotten better.

Hello kcmash,

Take a look at Steel Rubber Products. I looked at several reviews and they have a good reputation for quality products. This link is for the 1973 Mustang Mach 1.

Well they do make nice GM stuff

"Door weatherstrip

p/n:20-2829-72Door edge weatherstrip. This part is the primary door to body weatherstrip. Molded ends with metal cores.

$103.50/pr.

Ships in 5-7 Days"

As for the mustang weather-strip

When they say ships in 5 -7 days OR ships seperately - they ain't shipping it - it is someone elses product

Hello Don,

How do you like their product? Does it have UV protection built in?

Thank You for responding!

All,

One of my biggest issues with reproduction window felt kits is that they do not hold up to the UV and outside elements. As I stated in the thread earlier, they did not hold up after a few years. I thought Steele Rubber Products would be a good product to look at. After corresponding with Mustang of Ohio, Don was on target. I wrote to Steele Rubber requesting information regarding the Ford products. Here is my email thread.

We manufacture the majority of our parts here in our manufacturing plant in

Denver, NC. Most of our Ford parts are outsourced. I know the parts that we manufacture here

are manufactured with compounds to produce longevity and softness. I know a lot of

the Ford parts that we sell are the same that other dealers sell. We still offer a 100%

satisfaction guarantee on all parts that we sell, including outsourced items. Please let me

know if I can help you further.

Thanks,

Terri

Hello Terri,

Yes! My original question was, Does Steele Rubber make their own rubber parts or

is it a third party who makes the parts? Also, is there UV protection added to

your rubber products to protect against rot and drying out with cracks? The

reason I ask, is the repop window felt and rubber parts I installed on my 1973

mustang did not even last 4 years. I want a product that will perform/last just

like the original installed window rubber parts/felt weatherstrip.

Thank You

David Edwards

I am a little disappointed that I could not get the UV protection answer I was looking for from Steele Rubber Products. They stated that their products are manufactured with compounds to produce longevity and softness. Looks like their Ford rubber products are third party industry standard. One positive note, Steele Rubber Products and Ohio Mustang Supply, LLC will replace the defective rubber felt parts with an identical part as long as the original has not been altered in any way.

David, keep in mind steel rubber wants 103.50 for door w-strip

I have it for

Item #D1ZZ-6520530/1

71-73 DOOR WEATHERSTRIP

Pair of reproduction door weatherstrip. Made in the USA. Price: $59.95

When I replaced the door fuzzies on my 73 SR. I found that the glass rattles when I shut the door if the window is down. Then I looked for the NOS wide ones for several years. I found a pair at Carlisle in 09, but the seller wanted them more than I did 200$. Last year, while restoring my 71 vert, I tried something out of the box. I installed a second set of outer fuzzies (the ones without metal trim) just below the normal mounting position. When installed, they look just like the wide fuzzies. And when I put the glass in there is never any rattle or metal to glass impact.

Those are the " supplement " strips for 71-3's

I use to stock them but no one bought them

From what I have found / seen .

Early 71's had the narrow top strip with the narrow

lower " supplement " strip

When repops made the reproductions they used this 2 piece pattern

I have only found 2 very early 71's with the 2 pc set up.

Don

Hello judge,

Nice! I found a video showing how to install the outside weatherstrip. Lord and behold, I saw the where the supplement weatherstrip was installed. I will definitely look at my doors to see how they mount. My 1971 fastback had the large one piece weatherstrip.

Don, Do you have the supplement strips still?

Do you have a link to this video?

I also have to install it.

Finding a mounting point was difficult. I was able to get two flat head screws in it. I think I remember using a 6" Philips head driver on my drill. From what I remember, there were only two clear places to get the driver in. I'm pretty sure the glass was out at the time, but try it without removing it. The two screws hold it just fine and there is no glass contact when closing the door.
