We've all done it, placed car parts in storage only to find rust developed on unpainted surfaces while sitting. Found something that works.
Long-Term Corrosion Inhibitor a specialty product by WD-40 works to protect those areas. If you spray it on areas you're planning on painting, be prepared to do some scrubbing. I put it through it's tests here in rainy Washington on several items and it works.
