My Car
1973 mach 1 bought new and 07 pony
Any body have tips for replacing the front springs on my 73 Mach? The suspension is removed as of now, puting in all new components. the car is on jack stands and the motor is out. I guess what we need is the "right" spring compressor. We have a lot of experience with race cars (we run fusion stock cars) but those coils are short and easy to change. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rick

Hi Rick

I've not done it myself, but you are correct there is a coil spring compressor that is favored for use with our cars

here is one on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-73-Ford-Mustang-Torino-Fairlane-Ranchero-Comet-Spring-Compressor/121270427708?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222008%26algo%3DSIC.MOTORS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20887%26meid%3D6085718975477951325%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D9311%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D121262707101

here are instructions on how to build your own

and this one is another type that has worked for some members http://www.summitracing.com/parts/oes-27035?seid=srese1&gclid=COKUmaS8kroCFYhAMgodzRUAvg It is also apparently available at auto zone

Do a search of the site and you will find some threads that will be helpful

This thread explains it better than I can

I've done it Q's way with that tool, but slightly differently. You don't have to take the shock tower off and don't have to use the upper part of the spring compressor. You can put the bottom part inside the spring, then insert the threaded part into the top of the shock tower and use it as the leverage point with three washers as bearings. This is with some existing load on the springs. I found it easier than trying to fit both parts of the spring compressor inside the springs.

PS. that tool is a lot cheaper than the custom one to buy and it works every bit as well:)
