Hey everyone, I am trying to get my steering column out of my 71 grande so I can have room to install a clutch pedal. I can't seem to figure it out. I have the steering wheel off and the coupler is loose. How do you get this thing out?

It is not neccesary to remove the steering wheel.

1) remove trim panel uinder column (2 screws)

2) Remove 2 bolts from coupler under hood (rag joint, under master cylinder)

3) Disconnect electrical connector from underside of column under dash

4) Remove four bolts holding column under dash.

5) Pull column thru firewall

I completed all the steps listed, tugged on the steering wheel really hard but the column won't budge. Did I miss something?

I think there may be possibly some small screws holding the gasket on the column to the firwall under the dash. It has been a long time...i may have forgotten those...

Got it out! You were right, there were three screws that hold a gasket to the firewall. After that you have to rotate an arm on the engine side of the firewall to fit through the opening. Thanks!
