I am converting my console clock to Quartz but I can't get the old clock work out.

How do I remove the hands from the shaft?

Is the second hand screwed in place or simply pressed on?

The minute and hour ones seem to be clipped in place but the second one?

I'd hate to break them.

Thanks!

Mike,

I would love to give you direct information on what you ask, but i don't know enough about that technically. However, do you mind if i ask you why you are needing to remove the hands your self?

Why i ask, is because my original factory clock did not work, and i ended up sending it away to a specialist company in America that converts classic car clocks to digital quartz movements. I just gave them the whole clock, and they did the rest. Fantastic company to deal with, and they did a brilliant job on my clock. It now keeps good accurate time. What do you think?

Greg.:)

I bought a Quartz movement for the equivalent of 7$. I wanted to scrap all the innards of the original (well, maybe keep them in a drawer so they can collect dust:) ) and simply transfer the hands to the new rods.

Problem is, I can't get the face of the clock off because the hands are on the rods.

All three hands pull off. The second hand is always the toughest to get off and by far the scariest. The best advice I can give is a steady, straight pull.

I am curious about your quartz kit - the 71-73 console clocks were all made by General Time (Stamped GT or General Time on the back) and all the quartz kits sold publicly or on places like eBay are for Borg movements (marked B on the back).

The two are not interchangeable; the GT uses a crazy complicated set/adjustment mechanism that does not work with the Borg. In fact the mounting stud spacing is even different between Borg and General Time.

There are a couple of companies in the US that will do the conversion, but they do not sell the parts required, it is an in-house only conversion.

Thanks Bob.

I'm actually not trying to convert but I'll try and simply remove the whole shebang and put a new battery powered quartz thing behind the old face with the old hands so that it looks stock from outside.

The dial rod will become ineffective as the works will need to be adjusted from behind. It's a makeshift solution that should work fine if it works like I think it will.

If not, I'll have a broken clock. :-/

Darn, I was hoping you had stumbled upon an affordable solution for the GT clocks.

Hmmm... I wonder how many customers I could convince to wait until a specific time to plug their clocks in...? LOL

Thanks Bob.

You could disconnect the car's battery for storage, theft control or repair and not have to worry about resetting the clock. Plus it would be one less possible electrical fire source.
