hi, i have 72 four speed with a hurst shift lever. so what is the thread size? i know its different than a 71. i have to get the black ball, thanks
The thread size is 7/16 NF-20 (NATIONAL FINE THREAD) This is for the original HURST shifter, with the black ball, for 72 and 73 (4speeds) I bought my 73 new,and I checked the size of the threaded hole with a tap. In 1972 my friend had a72 mach 1 with the same shifter with black ball. 71 has a different shifter with T handle and flat sided stick. 72/73 has a round stick with HURST on both sides. The original black ball is "RARE FIND" now. I hope this post helps. Larry

For 4 spd toploaders

1972 and 1973 3/8" -24 (fine threads) Black ball with engraved white 4-spd pattern

1971 3/8" -16 (course threads) Hurst T-Handle

The 1971 t-handle is $24 from Jegg's or Summit racing. part # 1535000. I hear they are very close to the original in appearance.

Good read on T-Handles...

That is an EXTREMELY similar answer that I was going to provide. However it APPEARS Mustang68 has one UP'd us both with what appears to be a PROFESSIONAL answer. I think the guy is spot on.

Agreed. The 72 and 73 uses the 7/16 fine thread. And even though the black ball is original - there were/are T-handles out there with the 72-73 threads.

THANK YOU RAY;You are right about the HURST T handle is 3/8NC THREADS. Back in old days we bought the HURST T handle drilled out the hole to 25/32,then TAP the hole 7/16-20(FINE THREADS) Then you could replace the original 72/73 BLACK BALL(I`m lucky I kept my) If any body is looking to replace there shifter BALL/HANDLE(and you don`t know dia. of your shifter)find or buy short B0LT that will thread into BALL/HANDLE Then you can take the small BOLT with you to the store or SWAP MEETS.S o if it fits the BOLT it will fit you shifter. I hope this helps LARRY
