My Car
1972 Olive Green Notchback
Hello guys. I'm new here, new to domestics, new to muscle cars, new to ford. My father had a '71 Mach 1 with 351w, and I still remember how great that thing looked and sounded. I have always been into muscle cars but never pulled the trigger on one. I guess I had been waiting for the right moment. I'm a BMW guy and still own a few of them. Recently sold my E39 M5 and with the $ I got from its sale, I dropped my '73 Bavaria at a restoration shop and purchased my '72 notchback. Car looks great and sounds great. I can tell it was restored few years back with lots of cut corners but it's nothing serious that I can't repair. Guy had it for sale for $8k, I offered him $6k and told him I would pick it up in 15 minutes. He agreed so I went to check it out, interior was horrible and it had few missing stuff here and there so I told him I would give him $3.5k and started walking away, then he goes "alright $4k" So I paid him and drove the thing back home. Good deal? :D Late at night, rainy day, all fogged windows, no brakes... worse driving experience of my life. :D I immediately grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, and started making a list of everything missing and needed upgrades. I had a few grand spared so I was able to order all the parts the same day and got pretty much everything installed by now and she looks %99 complete. The kid I bought the car from had no idea what he had and couldn't tell me what's going on with the car so now I have a few questions. First of, the color. Original color looks to be dark green but it's repainted in this olive green type of paint. Does anyone know what color it is to be exact? Suspension. It looks pretty lifted and I was told it has gas shocks and aftermarket coils. What do you guys think? I'm thinking about lowering it as I don't really feel the 4x4 look lol. And last but best, the engine. I believe it's supposed to have 302 but a friend of mine who's into these cars told me its most likely a cammed 351w. It sounds great and pulls pretty hard, but wasn't really able to test its limits since brakes were horrible. I just did the disc brake conversion so I will be able to have some fun. I have uploaded a video clip, could you guys be able to tell what it is by hearing it? Thanks in advance.

Welcome from AZ, looks like you have made some nice improvements already

Welcome and it sounds like you are going wide open.

I cannot tell you much about your car except that the engine is a 302 or could be a swapped out 351 Windsor. The 72 could not be had with a 351 Windsor only the 302 or 351 Cleveland. The 302 and 351 w have 6 valve cover bolts and the 351 C has 8.

If there is still a sticker on your drivers door on the end it will give you the paint, trim, engine, rear, trans codes. If it is missing there is also a metal tag on the radiator support the will tell you some info. You can also order a Marti report that tells you everything about your car and if you spring for the deluxe edition you get lots of extras. You can also get a repo of the window sticker. The basic Marti report is I think $18.00 and will tell the options, when it was made and where it went to. You can find info on this site about the Marti report.

Most people go for the Mach 1 or convertible good to see someone wanting a coupe.

Thanks David. Aside from the valve covers having 6 bolts, there's no tag anywhere stating what motor it is. I don't really care much about its originality and I'm all for motor swaps. Soon as I figure out what I have, I will be able to decide either to modify the motor or toss it and get a better one. I do like the coupe very much and I believe when they re done right, they look gorgeous.

Looks like a 302 from here. Take a pic of the motor closer to the distributor. If it has a verticle rib that runs from the intake surface down to the dist pad, it's a 351W. From the pic you posted, it doesn't look like it has the width of a windsor to me..

My quick suggestions...

It does have "4x4 stance.." I'd get it down to at least stock, maybe an inch drop.

Black out the tail light panel, grill, and do a mach1 hood treatment. That would improve the looks tremendously, and break up all that olive. It's not a bad color, it's just a bit much with the mostly mono chromatic look.

Loom the wiring in the engine bay... It looks scary. Hopefully not too much electrical was molested.

Welcome.

welcome from SC. just thowing this out there, and i may get kicked out for saying this, but since you a bmw guy, It would be cool if you swapped a bmw 6 cylinder. just saying.

I have heard you could just cut a coil of the front for the drop but how about the rear? Is it the same procedure? Just cut coil on the rear too? I will eventually get a kit or something for that purpose but I would like to just tackle chopping stuff until then :D As for the wiring, it does look messy and I will rearrange them tomorrow. I was also thinking honeycomb rear as it desperately needs some black contrast. You re right.

Haha I do have a spare S50 out of an M3 but that will most likely go into my Bavaria. I love the way that my stang is in no need for computers and sensors. It's so simple to work on and that's great!

::welcome:: from Luxembourg, Europe.

From here it looks like a 302 but I could be wrong. The 351W is a little wider at the intake manifold and this looks more like a 302.

Measure it. If it's around 11 inches, It's a 351. If you measure 8 or 9 inches it's a 302.

I also have a 351W in mine (crate engine).

I actually like the color and I like the fact that there a re no black outs on the tail light panel and the hood. Makes it stand out. Just my two cents.

Cutting a turn off your coils is also an option but it will the springs stiffer.

Or you could get the 1 inch drop 620lbs coils that most vendors supply. Those make for a great stance with no clearing issues. They are pretty cheap.

If you're crazy like me, you can cut off another turn off those and go speed bump surfing. :)

On the rear, it could be air shocks or shackles that lift it as has been said before. Check that first. If you have leafs springs with a high arch, you can either swap them or use one inch lowering blocks that go in between the axles and the springs.

Welcome from West Texas!

Awesome looking car ::thumb:: I've never been a fan of the Ford greens, but after seeing so many gorgeous green Mustangs on this site, I'm warming up to it.

Glad you found your way here!

Hey, hope you don't mind, but I'm moving your thread to the "Introductions" area (it's one of those 'tradition' things ;) ).
