1971 Mustang Mach 1
Saw this on Facebook this morning. David Erickson in the 1971-1973 Mustang Owners - The Big Horse Club.

Selling my survivor Boss 351 - $38,000

This Boss is pewter colored with black vinyl interior, rim blow steering wheel and fold down rear seat. It has 33,000 miles and runs as good as it looks. I am including 2 sets of wheels and tires and a complete set of 1971 Ford shop manuals. 1 set of tires has factory repo Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires on the original Magnum 500 wheels. The other set of tires are staggered BF Goodrich radials TA’s on chrome 5 slot mags. These tires have less than 500 miles on them. It has a set of air shocks on the rear and Hooker headers but I have a regular set of shocks and the original exhaust manifolds that will of course go with the car. Original carb and distributor but it does not have the rev limiter and the emergency brake does not work. The black on the hood has some fade as well as the carpeting. All in all it is in very fine condition for being 44 years old. Any questions you can email me at [email protected], IM me on Facebook or text me at 605-220-6501 (David Erickson)

Just passing it along - I'm not claiming or assuming any responsibility for anything beyond that. ;) :D

Ugh...air shocks. And the mileage on tires is meaningless if the tires are more than 5 years old.

Yeah - but the price reflects it... rather than, "I saw one on TV go for $85,000, so that's what mine's worth." ;) :D

Wow - good eye! I completely missed that. Now I gotta ask a question on FB.

This little detail brings up all sorts of questions/scenarios:

  • Is it a Boss 351 Clone - and not the real deal?
  • Was there rear-end damage, and it was replaced this way without paying attention?
  • Did the owner just prefer the look and went that way while repainting?
  • Can it really be called a "Survivor" if it's been repainted/damage repaired? (where's the fine line between repaired and restored?)

So, I posed the question:

Thanks, David! ::thumb:: I gotta ask, though: why is the tail light panel wearing Mach 1 honeycomb trim over body-color paint (not blacked out)? Just a curiosity thing.
And he said:

Eric - One of those factory things. I have seen another Boss with the Mach 1 tail light treatment and gas cap. Makes it even more special.
I suppose if the car was ordered that way, well then... it is what it is. There was an article in Mustang Monthly a few years ago with an original-owner Boss 351 missing the front spoiler - the guy ordered it that way - can't really argue with the original owner, after all. ;)

Best bet is to contact the guy if you're interested and get the low-down. He might have supporting paperwork or would offer up the Marti Report or VIN or something to know for sure.

He never stated whether or not he's the original owner, so who knows? Still, a really nice car, and a bargain at that price for a Boss 351.
