1972 GT-351 Mexican Boss
Hi Folks, it's been a while since I posted but on the advice of Ray Cantwell I figured I would expand the info on the Mexican Mustang.

Years ago there used to be a web site dedicated to these cars but it has since been shut down. Very unfortunate since he has a detailed registry.

The cliff note version is that come from his old web site is that like in the states, mustangs were produced at the "La Villa" plant outside Mexico City. The government put an 47% domestic Production minimum on these cars.

Some of the main differences is all cars were in kilometers, Windsor only 351's thru 1973, Dana rear ends, lap belt only thru 1973, no sportsroofs were allowed to be built till 1973 which is the only year for the Mach-1 there.

There were true Shelby's down there too. Shelby has a buddy named Eduardo Velazquez Chavez who teamed up with Shelby for GT-350 production 65-70. From 71-72 they had little to no connection with Shelby and the model changed to GT-351. The coupes has a distinct roofline to mimic a fastback.

There was a full article in the Feb. 1991 Mustang Illustrated. We will post that soon. Lots of good info.

My 1972 GT-351 is there version of a Boss 351 or Mach -1.

Ray will be helping me upload some interesting info.

Mexico stamping on intake manifold - exhaust manifolds are similarly stamped. Goes to the Mexican Gov't requirement % of domestic (Mexican) manufacture.

Rich,

Thanks for sharing the info about your special car...never knew anything about these but love all the stuff posted by Ray. Really got a kick out of the girl in the diving suit with fins and spear. Love to see some pics of your car.

Great documentation, thanks for sharing with us.

BTW if I didn't see the picture I would have thought that rear air deflector was not a Ford part.
Ford of Mexico part... Yes and did you see what looks like a center brake light moulded into it?

So interesting - these cars are much different and if I hadn't learned about them I would be thinking someone did some weird mods.

Mexico could use the pop down gas cap because they didn't have the US regulations.

How many unique items for these Mexican Mustangs in the 1972 Showroom brochure?

We all know the Mexican manufactured 351 Windsor is unique to the Mexican Mustangs.

And there were no Mexican sportsroofs until 1973.

Keep in mind some different pieces are the accessories shown in the brochure.

lower front bumper 'bumperettes' - I guess that's what they are called?

chrome stalk on the racing mirrors

pop-down gas cap on a 1972.

1970 Mustang "351" engine fender emblem (seen on blue car in brochure)

unique Mexican Mustang door panels - similar to earlier US Cougars

different seats

different 4-speed shifter ball w/flat top

dealer installed unique under dash air conditioner option

dealer installed hood mounted tachometer option

Can anyone see anything else???

Ray

The pictures of the cars have the honeycomb grill but chrome surrounds and front bumper. Didn't the US cars with the deluxe grill have body color rubber bumper and surrounds?

Here is another 1972 GT-351 Mexican Mustang with 74,000 km (about 46,000 miles) on the odometer! owner: Ricardo Ramirez Tamayo

Beautiful car!
