How do i know when i need bearings? Car running good, i have been replacing everything that breaks but one thing that i can't see is the bearings, no sign of ovious malfunction but since the car sat for long time and everything else deteriorated i want to play on the safe side and have them replaced, am i correct?

Thanks!

Lupe:)

Their life span depends on:

The quality of the bearings

Your driving style

Your tire sizes

Your amount of miles you put on them

etc, etc.

There is no expiration date for them.

Like Paul said, you can hear them go bad.

Ok, i was going to replace them myself until i found out they are pressed on, will find somebody to do it:)

The car sitting won't cause the bearings to go bad

Jack your car up so the tire is off the ground

Grab the tire on the top and bottom and feel if you have play up and down

Don't go side to side on the front

If you can't feel play and you can't hear noise your good

If you do then you need to open them up to see what you have going on

Check them first then if you need help we can explain what to do

Front are easy enough

The rear are a bit more time consuming

If you pull you rear drums and have gear oil leaking, you most likely have a bad bearing as well

If water got into the drum/rotor it will kill the bearings/races.

Change them out and save a spindle not that hard.

watch a Youtube video or two and you can do it.

I wish i had the internet 40 yrs ago!

Just the rear wheel bearings are pressed on and require a press to remove and replace. Do not allow someone to use a torch to heat them or cut them off. Replace the axle seals.

The front wheel bearings can be removed, cleaned, and inspected. If any pitting is seen in either the rollers or races replace both, as a set. Also check for wear limits or unusual wear patterns. Replace the wheel seals.
