Just because it's cool
If you have any Hot Rod Pictorial books, or books about Funny Cars, you will notice that there were quite a few '71 to '73 Mustang Sportsroof and Mach 1 bodied Funny cars back in their era. A few that come to mind are Tommy Grove, The Blue Max, Connie Kalitta, and Shirley Muldowney, but there were lots more. I think I read somewhere that the NHRA rules dictated that a car running in AA/FC had to be bodied with a body within a 2 (?) year span of the year raced, so in '71 you could use a '70 or '71 body. Since the basic body didn't change from '71 to '73, a fiberglass body bought new for '71 could , according to the rules, be used thru '74 ( if you called it a '73). Same thing was going on with Pinto, Vega, and Camaro bodies in Funny Car. Here's Mickey Thompson's rig. Check out ALL of the cool cars in this shot.ee12_zpsmfjixvcf.jpg
