Hello all

I'm new at this posting thing so hope I'm doing this right.  This is a great site, fun and helpful.

Wondering if anyone has put a security system in their ride?  even though mine is a rag top I would still like to have the comfort of knowing it won't be stolen.  I've got an out of town car show to attend in August and the thought of having "Ginger" left in the hotel parking lot for 2 nights is a little scary.

Any thoughts out there as to best and affordable alarm systems?

Welcome! I have not installed a full blown security system, but I am about to install just a remote control ignition kill switch/relay. Its not fool proof but concealed it should slow them down and make if more difficult. I am sure someone the forum has installed a full system.

I just took one off, lol. A kill switch is good and if you have a section of plastic coated chain you can loop through the latch on the underside of the hood and go down under the hood latch and put a pad lock on to keep them out from under the hood. Some type of boot on a wheel also makes them look for an easier target. Take the coil wire off and take into your room with you. Not many thieves come prepared to do repairs just break in and hot wire and go. Or just back up with one of the new wreckers and scoop it up from the parking spot.

At shows check with the hotels and find one that has security in the parking area.

If someone wants to steal it bad enough nothing will stop them.

This is all the crap the PO had just put in this car, alarm, radar detector under carpet, pioneer stereo with two amps and boom box in the trunk. You can see the alarm siren on the trunk in the pic.

Insurance is cheap then who cares if they take it. Had to replace entire wire harness it was so hacked up.

hey guys thanks for the fast replies

kill switch might just do the trick - you say your about to install it - did you just find it on the host of supply sites or did you find it at a place that specializes in auto security?

I'll post some pics as suggested but i do need to take some better ones

Nice car! Tell us more about it. I bought my remote switch on amazon. Nothing fancy two remotes, 12v 15 amp relay. I'll PM you with more specifics.

Kill switch in a concealed area is good. Make sure it would be a place ONLY you would know. I also pull the distributor rotor from my 67 when I leave it in a parking lot overnight. Also, turn the front wheels to fully left or right. Little harder to tow if they hook the rear and run. If someone wants it they will get it, the point is to make it to difficult and slow them down enough to choose a different car. Maybe install some locking lugs you can remove at the show. Again, if they want it bad enough they will get it. Create as many problems for any wood be thief to make them reconsider.

Welcome to the family form West TN and you have a very nice car.

I had a Ravelco installed when I got Christine.

A little pricey ($500) for a kill switch, but it clearly does the job. My plug is under the dash so it's out of sight. I even have to feel for it when plugging in the adapter. You can see the plug ring (red) in my pic, but once the plug is out...can't see anything.

The guy took 5 hours for the install. While they might tow her away, there's no way Christine is going to be hot started.

Take the coil to distributor wire off the car when you park it.

As noted, if they really want it, they will take it. Thing is, these days it's probably more profitable to take something more modern from the lot instead of an uncommon vintage car. I've driven my 73 vert 30K miles in the last 20 years to shows and events throughout NY, Vermont, Pa, Ohio, even to Nashville for the 40th in 2004 when vintage stangs were in a really hot market and although theft was a concern, the more serious problem was finding a safe parking spot where it has the best chance of not being dinged / scratched / dented by some uncaring (or intentional) jerk who parks 6 inches away and slams their door / suitcase / whatever into your car because they can.
