Ok,

My 71 FB has recently received it's donor toploader from the 73 mach donor (RIP)

Rebuilt a NEW shifter keeping everything from the new shifter except the shift levers themselves.

The linkage is OEM flat slider adjustment with all new oem type gromments.

Would/ could one modify this set up to the AFTERMARKET type and keep the stock linkage.

I am thinking that steel bushings would give a better shift.

have seen some pictures of some that are using heim joints on both ends with straight rods.

Would rather not go this route.

how do I make it better ?

It would be hard to feel the difference unless the oem's are worn and looses

I've run the stock OEM Hurst and the aftermarket Hurst unit. I've run the pit pack steel bushings and hated them. Best compromise was steel at the trans end, nylon on the shifter end, other wise it rattled and buzzed.

Since you have the new OEM bushings in the shift arms, I'd run it like that. Even the most worn OEM unit still shifted fine, unless there was something physically wrong in the box itself.
