My Car
1971 Mustang Mach 1, M code, 4 speed.
Guys, I couldn't resist asking a friend if I could post some pictures of his just finished Dearborn built  '70 Boss 302. So here are a few pictures I hope you will enjoy. This car was sold new  in Toronto and remained in the area since. This car is mint original condition, no rust!! It had been hit lightly on the front left corner, so the only panels not original are the front inner apron and front left fender. They at NOS though.

Every detail is amazing, all NOS wherever possible. The tires are as original and the rims are also as original 15X7" with NOS hub caps. The space saver spare tire is the original and never been on the road. Also the car was Radio Delete. He's done an amazing job which took 2 years and everything was done by him.

Enjoy.

Geoff.

Oh man throw some magnum 500s on that car and its a chick magnet, very cool and nice job.
Actually, he took off a set of Magnum 500's off because they were NOT original equipment on that car. The Magnums were aftermarket , so no he didn't want them.

Wouldn't mind buying them and putting 15" on my Mach 1 though!!

Yes the steel wheels look great, but they probably had the trim rings from the factory. It's a great look, after seeing Magnum 500's on so many cars. Mine came from the factory with Magnum 500's (originals are still on the car), but if I ever get a set of Coker original RWL tires I thought of going the steel wheel, trim ring, hub cap route. The Boss 302 is such a legendary car. I'd have to give a slight nod to the '69 because I prefer its face, but they are both incredible cars.

Thanks for sharing. Looks great.

Will defer to the more informed here, but growing up in the time all the 70 boss' I recall and the ads had trim rings with their dig dish caps. Just my $0.25.

Trim rings, center caps and 15 x 7” steel rims were standard fare on the 69/70 Boss 302 Mustangs. Magnums were standard on the 69-70 Boss 429’s and optional on the Boss 302’s only. Like our cars, so many 69-70 Mustangs are sporting Magnums I don’t think MCA deducts points for incorrect wheels anymore!

He may not be running trim rings cause he can’t find any or that are not insanely priced. Some “Midnight Supply” parts specialist’s removed two rims, trim rings and center caps from my Money Pitt #2 which is a factory F60 x 15” car. Did find a set of trim rings for $1,300.00! So mine will probably end up with Magnums also. [emoji594]

Steve, I'll pass on your remarks to my friend. It would be interesting to find out if this car did or did not have the rings. He has the build sheets and Marti. Perhaps he just can't find any!!

Thanks to you all for your comments.

Geoff.

Steve, I just talked to my friend and he does have the trim rings but just doesn't want them on. So you're right, they should have trim rings with center caps.

Geoff, this is something I'm sure he already knows, but make sure he wraps and stores those trim rings like they are made of gold.....Cause they are!     :D
Will do for sure. I know he paid a small fortune for the NOS caps.

One problem he has found since it's been on the road and that's only a couple of weeks, is the Scott Drake upper and lower control arms have bad ball joints, so he's ripping them out and putting Moog ones in, hoping they'll be better quality. I guess NOS suspension parts are not available here. Any suggestions?

The front end "kit" I bought for my Mach are also SD, didn't know that until I got the kit, but so far I have not had such a problem that I know of, going to check!!

Geoff, even though the 15" trim rings had been in use since 1970, you would think Ford only put them on a dozen cars when pricing them. My Money Pit #2 had the F60 X15 option, but with two rims, caps and trim rings "Removed", Money Pit will be running some NOS Magnums I have set back. The original M code engine and C6 were missing when I acquired her and she is FAR from being a Show Queen, and the price of the trim rings is out of my price range. The caps are just about as bad. Brushed finish was used for trim ring applications and the shiny finish on non trim ring cars. Finding the proper finish and with no damage can be challenging.

As far as front end components I trust Moog, and they are also the official supplier to Nascar. When Ford came out with a new line of steering and suspension components to be more competitive with the aftermarket, they were branded Motorcraft and Moog was the supplier. The blue and white Ford oval boxed parts were still required for under warranty repairs to meet some states requirements for OE parts only for warranty repairs.

I used to think a lot of Scott Drake products, but after seeing some comments on here about different problems everyone is having, looks like they are just someone else with their hands in our pockets!   :D

Steve, you are awesome!! Thanks for your knowledge and insight. I'll pass your comments on to Bob. I'm sure he'll be pleased to have the Moog ones verified as good parts. I too think SD need to up their game with quality. This "Made in China" crap has to stop. I would not mind paying a few extra bucks for US or Canadian made parts if I only have to do the job once!

Geoff. :thankyouyellow:

I agree with the quantity of junk that is available from China, but it is more the importer's and supplier's faults than the Chinese. China is completely capable of manufacturing quality products. The lack of specifications and quality control lies at the feet of companies like Scott Drake, who are only interested in pushing out low price/quality for quality product prices. Quality products, even from China, come with a price tag.

+1 on Don C's post. There are companies that have products made in China and have demanding specifications and rigorous quality control. I'm typing this on such a product, my Mac tool. Chuck

I didn't mean to open a can of worms. The Chines have been making "stuff" for thousands of years and they are typically brilliant people all around. You are both right, it does come down to our suppliers demanding and maintaining the quality we expect, but as always it seems a few less scrupulous companies sidestep quality over profit when the customer isn't looking. It doesn't have to be that way.

Geoff.

Geoff, this is your thread, you can take it where ever you want. Even if it involves opening cans of worms!! Normally when Eric and I are discussing anything and it turns to Fox Mustangs, we always try to blame David.

Don C is 100% correct. China can and does manufacture quality products. The importer and suppliers who want the product built as cheaply as possible but then retail them at premium prices are the cause of the *&%!$# junk we are having to sort through. I prefer to buy American manufactured, but will also purchase from another country IF I am receiving the same quality part.

Now Geoff's friend Bob has to risk damaging show quality paint on a Boss 302 to remove junk parts he probably paid big $$$$ for!! :)

And..what do you know about the silver Lincoln vert in your second picture? Those early 60's Lincolns are super sharp!!

Too funny!!

Totally agree.

He does and he's pissed off that he has to re-do the suspension. The bonus I guess is that he can have the satisfaction of knowing he has premium parts on a premium car.

I'll keep my eye open next time I see that car. I think he is a new comer to our local A&W Cruise Night as I don't recall that one before and I know most of the cars and guys who attend. IF I remember, I'll get back to you on that one. (or you can remind me!!)
