Who's running 17 & 18 rims?

Looking for thoughts and opinions of wheel setups, as it's time to replace the tires on the 71 Mach, which are 225/70R14 on the factory steelies. Guess I've gotten my money's worth out of them since they are from 2006. Looking at tire options, not real happy with what's out there as far as value for the dollar. IIRC I paid $60 for the Yokohamas that are on there now. The options I see are Coopers (no way after the $150/ea garbage tire experience on my Outback), Radial TA (totally overpriced) or some no-name crap from Joe-Bob's or DongHungLo tire company.  :angel:

I'm in a mood to play around with some basic suspension mods since my engine project is getting pushed to at least next year. I need to rebuild the rear drums, so I'm going to swap for discs, possibly the late 05-14 Mustang setup, which requires larger rims. That'll also include some ride height and rake adjustments, as it sits too high in the front right now. I'm considering running a staggered setup, 18x9.5 rear, 17x8 or 18x8 fronts. I've always been taken by the look of a 71 that was featured in Hot Rod a while back.

Thinking the US Mags Rambler in Matte Grey will look good against the Bright Blue Metallic of my Mach.

I'm very interested in what you come up with, same delimma, 12 year old BFG's on 14" steelies/dog dishes. When I get mine back on the road I'll need something different.

I have some cheap hurst 17x8 4.5” backspacing wheels on the front of my car.   That combo seems about right, any closer to the UCA and there would be issues.  Those ramblers or anything from Team three wheels can be had in that offset.  I have tube style UCAs and have about 5/8” clearance, maybe a bit more.  That gives me enough room for lip style wheel weights.

 

Going wider in the rear, say 9.5” I’d want 5.5” backspacing, maybe more.  

 

There is a guy named Jason who has a series of videos on YouTube about his 71-73 named “Large Marge”.  He had a set of custom wheels made up by Team Three, 18” in the back, 17” in the front, but he never gives up what offset he went with.  The video is worth a watch.

Personally, I think he pushed the limits of how close the wheels can be to the sheet metal.  I would want them inboard a bit more.

I’m running 17x8 inch Torq Thrusts II’s, 8’s are good on the front but I would go with a 9.5 on the rear. I recently went to a 255 on the rear and like it better than the 245’s I was running.

I like your choice of rims! Those Ramblers look cool. And you thought of lowering the suspension too. That’s the one thing people usually don’t think of.

It’s funny that I went back from my 18 inch rims to your current setup with trim rings and dog dishes on 15 inch rims. :)

Check out Coy's Wheels.  We went with the C-67's.  While the car turns heads, the wheels always get attention of their own.

I have mine sitting on 20x8.5s but havent had any road time as she needs carb work and im working on painting her. The rear is also sitting way down and i need to put new leafs on

 

 

Nice project.....it's amazing how many tools you can stack on the front hood......mine is the same way....lol

73 conv. 460, D0VE large valve heads, Performer RPM manifold, Voodoo 227/233 cam, Holley 950 HP carb, C6 trans, 3.25 trak-loc.

Boss motorsport 308 wheels.  18 x 8 front and 20 x 10 rear. Lowered front end 1 inch and rolled rear fenders.

 

 

 

 

 

 

That looks awesome. I need to find some 18s for the front of mine.

 

Update on mine with 1" extension on the rear  and 5 leaf springs.  20x8.5" all around
