Accident

I finally went to the shop where they are fixing my car. I’m very pleased with the progress. They have the hood, fenders and doors painted. It all looks really nice. Only thing was that I told them I wanted twist locks added, but they forgot to cut the holes before paint. No big deal, but I’m sure it would have been easier to cut the holes first.

The bumper (thanks Don from OMS) is looking nice too. I took a few pics of the car, but I didn’t take any of the panels, was to overwhelmed with looking at everything that I just forgot to. Plus, I was really making sure that they get the hood pattern correct, so they only have to do it once.

I was pleasantly surprised that they removed the doors and were painting them correct, hanging in the spray booth. I’m having them do the black along the bottom and I kinda forgot that my door jambs weren’t painted all the way in far enough but they were already getting it ready. The painter also showed me the blackout color on a different hood and it looks really nice. I’m sure looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Great shop and great bunch of guys! They showed us all around the shop and we checked out some of the other cars they are working on. I’m so glad I took it to this place.857D820D-1480-436D-83B5-C225C707B9AA.thumb.jpeg.95d4095d8832c91d42e94a0a3d9a4d39.jpeg23322F39-BCC6-42EB-8442-DE72B7A2C1F3.thumb.jpeg.42612a162599e3a81cde79ffe4a3dc78.jpeg2ED7BF3C-D33C-4DCA-8906-2B326444EE18.thumb.jpeg.e6a88e12dc4256ba03b9a7008748b53c.jpegC46B46BA-AB36-435F-8883-B84F4F64C4FB.thumb.jpeg.205d67861749acf5c04e3f2600544e9e.jpeg

Lookin' good, Jpaz!  Glad you found a quality shop to take care of the car!

I wonder if they are interested in advertising on this forum? We have a few parts dealers but no restoration specialists!  Sounds like you are getting some parts from our vendors as well!

All in all, it looks great...can't wait to see the finished project!

Ya Rocketfoot, once they get it all done and everything is good I will ask him that. Paul, the owner asked me how I found out about them cause he is trying to get their name out there. I’m sure he is always looking for more work, but I do have to say that my car is the only 7123 there, other than Paul’s 71 429 Mach 1 project car. Which he said he has no idea when he’ll get to restoring it, they are quite busy. But I’m sure he will be interested to do more of our years and we’ll see what what happens.

Looking at the pics, are the outside edge of the front tires more worn the middle? Car looks like it coming along nicely.

Yes, that’s from me being lazy and not rotating them. I asked them to put the fronts on the back and the backs on the front. They are also getting kinda old, so I need new ones anyway.

Thanks for detailing the process, it’s great that you are ok and found a shop that specializes in these cars that is somewhat local!

Looking forward to seeing the final result...

Hey no problem. I hope nobody else has to go through getting into an accident. But if they do,  I hope this helps.

I was kinda surprised that there weren’t any Mustang specific shops that work on our years like this around here. I live in the Detroit metro area and the shop where my car is, is about 100 miles away in Saginaw. Not to far but, I sure am glad they aren’t any further.

I can’t wait see it all done too. Hopefully we have an early spring this year so I don’t have to wait too long till I can drive it!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey guys, here’s another update. They have made some great progress on everything. Doors and fenders are all back on. The blackout on the bottom is all done too. The hood is painted with the blackout and I’m very pleased with it. I still have to see it in person, but I think it all looks great!

The machine shop is all done with everything and it’s back at the shop where my car is. They started assembly on it today, so it should be all back together by the end of the week.

Here’s a few pics of the progress on the car.D62F3AF1-46C9-47E8-85E5-9045EAD2866F.thumb.jpeg.e55653052e3d3fd89d02b430ae393d8b.jpegEAD19EC9-A050-4A5E-A5A1-E78E4EE2BABF.thumb.jpeg.66bf707a2e4ae5a55971da487429f9ce.jpeg76CED5B3-7692-4239-8F09-4E210BE58807.thumb.jpeg.2a791c1f2151b7ee5762f04ecccca288.jpeg

Looks great, you'll have her back in no time!

Did they paint using base/clear or single stage?

Ya shouldn’t be too much longer now.

I’m pretty sure he uses PPG paint but not sure if it’s a single stage or not. I will ask him again.

They even got the hood black out correct!!!!

I made sure they did and it turned out so nice. They had used the pattern from Mustang Monthly in the past that was wrong, like a ton of other guys did. So I explained to them how it was wrong, and went over the correct layout with them. They were very great about realizing how the pattern from MM was wrong and had no problem with me showing them the correct way to lay it out.

Anyway I’m sure glad I took it to this shop. Paul and his crew are really great to work with and very knowledgeable! My car is turning out really nice, and I would recommend them to anyone. Their web site is Mustang Craftsmen .com.

John, I'm very happy for you. These guys certainly are doing a great job. The hood looks about as good as it could ever be, very nice!

Perhaps they should talk to Motortrend TV (velocity) or Discovery TV and do a TV series. Their work looks way better than some of the crap being shown on some of those series.

It's starting to make me think about redoing my hood, but matching the metallic Light Pewter would be almost impossible.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in August.

Geoff.

Thanks Geoff, ya they are doing a great job. I think trying to deal with the tv stuff would hinder the work and the quality. But I’m sure the money would be good!

I was wondering the same about my color too cause it’s not a stock Ford yellow. But I had some of the original paint and the formula that was used. So it had to be pretty easy for them to match it, even though they used a different and much better paint. I think you’d be surprised at how it could be matched, but I guess the metallic would be tougher.

I’m really looking forward to the Ford show in August.
