That's a pretty common occurrence on the 123s. The EPA paint they used after 1970 turns to dust over time and will smudge or blow off like chalk if you're not careful. If you cannot find a good oil gauge face you can get the stock white on (matte) black overlays from whitegauges.net.

I have one send PM and I will get pics. The AMP gauge had melted so the oil and temp are still good.
