I know there's been lots of discussion about mufflers on this site but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. I have Flowmaster 40 series on my car 73 vert now and while they sound great, the resonance at highway speed is almost unbearably loud inside the car, no way to carry on a conversation without screaming. Thinking about changing to Magnaflow mufflers but wondering if resonance is still a problem. Their description in summit catalog says no resonance but would like to hear first hand experience.

Yeah, me too. I have the same drone on my Flowmaster 40's on my Mach 1, but it only seems to be there between 2000 and 2500 rpm, then it is less.

I too need a new exhaust this year and am undecided what I want. As you say, love the sound but not the drone or resonance.

My exhaust shop guy suggested Dynamax, but no idea how they sound.

What to do, what to do!

Geoff.

I’m pretty sure mine are dynamax, they just say turbo on them. I have heard a lot of guys talking about a drone or their  exhaust is to loud on the highway. I really don’t think that about these mufflers, they are not that bad at all. But I do have cast iron exhaust manifolds. I have only had these, never any other brand on this car, so I can’t really make a good comparison.

I am having engine rebuilt and headers put on, so I’m sure it’s going to be louder than before. I’ll let you guys know what I think after it’s done.

unfortunately nobody can answer your problem completely because resonance is not always easy to cure in aftermarket systems, however, in general, i have experienced a lot less resonance with the magnaflows over any flowmaster.

My brother in law, switched from flowmaster to magnaflow on his 70 429cj cobra. Much better as far as "drone" goes. We took it out today its not quiet but with the built  cj who needs tunes

Hell ya!

Such a under rated car in the muscle car world and I don't know why.  :chin:  Awesome in black.

I am too busy to read thru your 10 page thread although I'm sure there is some very good info there, so in short, did you have obnoxious drone and reduce it by a large amount by simply installing these insets?

Do the inserts come in different sizes?
+1 on that Barnett468.

I want to run 2 1/4" pipes.

Well, if you go to the Car Chemistry link, you'll notice the drop-down menu that shows what sizes are offered.   :shootself:

And you actually replied back to him in the long-ass thread way back in Oct 2017, Geoff (after he'd installed them and reported his results).   :whistling:

To get back to the topic. The Torino is no trailer queen , in 8yrs it has made many 1-4 hr trips to cars shows. He put the magnaflow mufflers on a couple years ago . Cruising at 55-70 it is much better. I think it also picked some hp.

I'm old so i have an excuse not to remember that, plus my reply was probably too long for me to read now.

This is the answer I would like to know... hope the headers do work out well!

…. Well, I'm old too. Can't remember what I did 5 mins ago, let alone back in Oct 2017!!

 I'll look that up again.

Thanks young man!

Geoff.

The Dynamax Turbos is what my local muffler specialist suggested. I think I'll look at those as an option.

I went back and re-read most of the 2017 thread. Most of what has been asked in this post is mentioned in that thread. However, I don't think the inserts are what I want to use.
