buying a Ford Mustang on car auction?

What do you think about buying a Ford Mustang on car auction? My friend recommended these website with used Mustangs:

What do you think guys? It's not 1971, 1972 or 1973 Stang but hope I'll eventualy find a good one on car auction

What a gorgeous car. This is a race car, make sure you know if you want this car for the street, there will likely be quite a bit of work to get it back to a street only car. My advice, go see it in person. Kick the tires, give it a test drive, look over every detail. Have them put it on a lift and check for hidden collision damage, rusted out floor pans and torque boxes. Check for things like freshly added undercoating, which is usually used to conceal rust damage. Poke around in the low spots with a screw driver to see if theres any soft spots under the coating. If you cant do it yourself, hire a mechanic to do it. You don't want any surprises especially if it directly affects the value of the car.

If you don't want a race car, buy a different car. If you want a car that will be primarily a track car then this may be your car. If you want a street car, there are much better deals to be had.

Nice looking car. Very similar to what I want to do to my car someday. But what do they need all that tire for with an itty bitty 5.0?? Little overkill!

I have bought a number of cars at auctions like Mecum and Barrett Jackson, but I've never bought one from an online auction. I have bid on stuff on BringaTrailer.com. from my experience in buying old cars, I always figure that I will need to spend at least 20-25% of the purchase price to actually get the car into the condition I hoped it was in when I bought it. I always figure that extra money into the price I am willing to pay. that 25% does not include any planned restoration or modifications, its just the number I use to budget for "unplanned" expenses .

Regardless of where you buy you need to put eyes on the car not just pictures. Pictures lie and hide lots of sins. If you do not know the model you are looking at find someone that does. REALLY does not someone that takes a book with them to refer to.

Some of the ones that I see at the high dollar dealers are totally incorrect and just build out of pieces of what ever they have.

A numbers matching car will be worth maybe double what a pieced together car is. A concourse restore is entirely different from a shiny dressed up resto mod and cost way more to build. Being at a big auction like Mecum or BJ does not make it a great car.

NEVER NEVER buy without a view in person you will regret.

Mecum and BJ actually make it worse because they spend so much time shining up the cars.  like a jewelry store, everything looks better shining under the right lights.

Pretty cool site if you don't mind a car with some damage.
