Squeaky Leaf Springs/rear suspension

Time to do the suspension on my 72 Mach 1.  It has been a project of mine for 4 years now. The car had sat outside for 10 years before I got it.

The rear suspension squeaks really bad.

When I listen under the car while someone is pushing up and down on the rear, it is hard to tell exactly where the squeaking is coming from.

Is it always the leaf spring end/shackle bushings that squeak?

The leafs themselves look a little rusty between the leafs due to the long term outside storage the car had.  Can the leafs themselves squeak?

Any thoughts on the common squeak culprit for old Mustang rears and leaf springs?

The leafs can squeak, don't forget the shock bushings and shock absorbers. Axle u-bolts/spring plates should also be checked to make sure they aren't loose. I would also take a look at the upper shock mounts.

I agree with Don. Also, there should be anti squeak pads between some of the leaf's. If any of these are missing it can cause a squeak.

The car is going to get new shocks.

The rubbers are in place between the leafs.

I can do new bushings and shackles, but I'm really just wondering who is the main squeaker?

I'm really just wondering if all the new rubber parts will cure the squeakiness or if I'll put it all back together

and still have squeak because of the leafs themselves.  That's what I don't want of course.

You'll just need to get under there with a can of your favorite spray lubricant. Spray one thing at a time, until the squeak stops. A helper will keep you from having to over do the unused muscles you'll find by getting under and upright numerous times
