Wanting to buy new exhaust system for my 351 C 4bbl, 73 mach 1, suggestions?

I have pretty much straight pipes with cherry bomb exhaust but when I bought new hooker long pipe 3" headers (6915hkr) the old pipes didnt fit. I had to bend the old pipes and rig them to work so I'm looking for a new exhaust that will work and still have some rumble. Honestly the cherry bomb was pretty loud and I could go quieter with some flowmasters but just want to get something that sounds good with some rumble like modern mustangs. I wanted to see what exhaust systems others have chosen with these headers

I just put those headers on my 351 Cleveland. I already had sonic turbo mufflers on the car. I had an exhaust shop make a custom H pipe and they did the install. It sounds great and not annoying at all. I can hear the radio if I want and I don’t get hardly any drone on the freeway. Some of the Flowmasters are pretty loud and have a bad drone. Maybe Im getting old, but I really don’t like the loud obnoxious exhaust much anymore. I guess it depends on what you like.

I believe that they are made Dynomax now.

I just recently put a new custom stainless 2 1/2" exhaust on a 71 mach1. I had a local shop custom bend it all and it turned out great. X-pipe and flowmaster FX mufflers have a nice sound to them. Hey - don't be hatin' on the Pypes kit.  

 

Mine's a 2.5" Stainless Steel system with X-pipe and Pypes Street Pro mufflers... and doesn't have that 'Brappy' sound Flowmasters are famous for. ;)

The Pypes kit does not fit staggered shocks, which is unfortunate, they make a good kit at a reasonable price. But, if you have the competition suspension with staggered shocks you are out of luck, unless you want to have to modify it.

When I've been under my car looking things over, it looks like the staggered shock pipes on my car would also fit a non-staggered shock setup. I have no idea what they are, though, they were on it when I bought it. Which makes me wonder why Pypes can't supply both.

 

I keep hoping someone will buy the Pypes kit and let us know what it takes to modify it for staggered shocks. No, it won't be me, I just don't have the get-up-and-go I used to. If I did I'd be trying to see if a could make a front suspension from a 2015+ Mustang work on our cars. I think it's possible with a little modification, like adding a coil-over setup to the struts for the ride height. The lower control arm and strut rod would require new frame mounts. If the salvage yard has one the next time I go, I might see if I can get some measurements.

If it's staggered shocks, then Precision makes a kit that'll fit. No one else makes one that'll fit them. IIRC, Mac's was working on one, but I don't know if they ever brought it to market. If there are no staggered shocks, then you can use a 65-70 kit like that from Flowmaster, Pypes etc.

I bought it for my car and when I went to install it, it didn’t fit great because I have an 8.8” rear end that’s offset.  I went to local hot rod exhaust shop and there was only about $100-150 price difference for a complete custom exhaust...... plus I’m lazy ? so the extra $150 was well worth the money. And they added in my electric cutouts. I have heard a lot of good things about the pypes kits. Just didn’t work for my application.

Just messin' with ya, Man.  I'm happy with my Pypes set-up, but I'm thinking I wish I would've gotten a set of dumps along the way and had the custom exhaust done as well (bypass the muffler, but route back into the tail pipe... rather than dump right out under the car).

Who’s electric cutouts are you using?

I want to put a set of 3” on mine.

Badlanz’s electric cutouts. I got the stainless steel y-pipes with it. Also bought the remote control system that opens and closes them with a key fob. That was really cool but kept breaking. Cheap electronics. I just use the standard rocker switch for them now. The cutouts themselves I have had on the car close to 5 years and have had 0 issues.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant Mac Exhaust, not Mac's Ford Parts. They were supposedly working on a 2 1/2" system for staggered shocks.

I should have known you were talking about Mac Exhaust, I have bought their products before.

 

There is a local exhaust shop that does mandrel bent exhausts, aluminized or stainless, in any practical size. Due to the close quarters by the gas tank I'm thinking 2-1/2" is probably about it. I haven't found out what they will charge for stainless. With unleaded gasoline, not living on the beach, not driving on salted roads, and not a lot of miles aluminized will probably outlast me, anyway.
