Cut and paste axle?

Continuing trying to understand what parts my car has I am now looking at the axle and see both sides look like they have been cut and welded!!   I know that it came (or should have) with a peg leg rear end and 2.75 gears.  I now has traction loc (as they both spin) and from what I can sort of count, 3.0 gears (3 spins  of the rear wheel to one of the drive shaft).  I would assume a correct axle would not have been cut as mine appears to have been?

Well surprised but glad to know this.  As soon as I saw those I thought of the restoration shows where the are cutting down the axle housing.
