Hi I have a 4 spd toploader with a 28 spline output shaft. I want to put a trac lock differential in. I have found one with a 31 spline shaft. My current drive shaft is 28 on both ends. If I get the 31 differential will I need a new drive shaft or can I change some yokes? Or is it not possible to even change from 28 to 31?

I may not be understanding your question correctly but, unless you are building a VERY large amount of torque and using slicks, there is no need to change the main shaft (output shaft) in the transmission. See: http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/idchart1.htm

Depending on what the 31 spline differential came out of you may need, change the yoke on the pinion or use a "combination u-joint" (1310 caps on one axis, 1330 caps on the other). See:http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/c58_ford_9_inch.html

You will need 31 spline axles. See: http://www.strangeengineering.net/

I hope I understood the question. Chuck

Thank you that helps a lot. It seems like for my application it would be easier to just find a 28 spline trac lock so I don't have to dish out the cash for the new axles.

Almost anyone would be willing to trade a 28 spline TL for a 31 spline TL, including me. If you are not drag racing on slicks, or really sticky drag radials, the 28 spline TL should be fine. Also the cheapest. Just make sure you don't end up with the older style (pre mid 69 model year) Equa-Lok, much less robust set up. Chuck

I didn't even know about the Equa lok set up. From the article it is indeed a Trac lok. Thanks again for the help.
