My Car
1968 Coupe: 393w, TKO-600, Maier Racing springs, Global West suspension, Currie 9in with forged axles, 3.50 gears, Trutrac, Baer brakes front/rear
1973 Mach-1: 351c 4V, C-6, 3.73:1 gears and a long "To Do" list..
Now that I am squaring away the suspension for my '73 Mach-1, I'm starting to look for wheels and tires. I'm pretty set on a 17x9.5 wheels for the rear with 275-40/17's. For the front, I'm thinking 17x8 with a 245-45/17. My question is, will a 17x9 and a wider tire fit for the front?

Thanks...

think they will rub at full lock. No problems with 17x8 as that is what I have with 18x9.5 on the rear
Thats the same size rims I have! What size tire are you using?

I have:

275/45/18 rear

235/40/17 front

So, if 17x9 hits the ball joint and the 18x9 Almost hit, can I assume an 18x8 should fit?

if you put a 17x9 in the front if it did fit, the 71-73 mustang will turn like an army tank!!!!!!

stick with a 18x8 or a 17x8. i'd go with the narrowest tire that will fit on that tire size. i went with 235/45/17, i could of gone with a 225 but i would of had to go with 50 series.

the more offset on the wheel on a 17x9 will worsen the turning radius.

on www.vintagevenom.com one of the co owners has a 69 with cobra brakes and he has 18x9's all around but they are using sn95 wheels which is because of his cobra brake set up. with 18x9's you can go deeper on the BS'ing. but yet again, be careful cuz if you go too much further in on a lower car the more it'll rub on the steering box bolt on a ard left turn on A LOWERED CAR. stock height cars seems to be ok.

with with a 17x8 and if you must have an 18 for more choices in tires and height do it just for the rears.

if i had to do it again, i'll get a 17x7/8 front with the skinniest tire possible (prolly at max a 215-225 width) and a 18x11/12 wheels. instead i got 17x11's in the rear.

I have 17x7 all around with 225/55/17 on the rear and 225/50/17 on the front. They look good to me:)
i wish i would of gone with a 17x7 in the front but they didn't have that size in the wheel i wanted. i would of gone with the skinniest tire possible in the front and the widest possible in the back.

I just received my wheels and realize the lady had 18x9 and 17 x 8 for up front. Glad I got a good deal and glad you guys saved the day with this information. Just ordered a second set of rear tires to fit 18's.

Well, I made it too the shop to have tires mounted on my 17x7 and 17 x 9 Eleanor wheels. I like them. I think I could have gone with a 265 50 in the back and 245 50 in front but I went with 245/45 and 225/45. I like them but bigger tires would have been a weeeeee bit better.

If you're concerned with the look, try lowering the front and back a bit. Those tires will blend in very nicely.

Those kinds of rims and tires require further mods to the stance or the wheels will look lost in the wheel wells. Ask me how I know. :)

Lux, how much did you drop the car. I think 2 inches in front and rear ought to be enough. With the wheels tucked up so far do you have any problems with rubbing?

No rubbing.

I have the one inch shorter, 620lbs coils from Mustangs Unlimited (the blue ones) and I cut a whole turn off, so that probably makes more than 2 inches.
