1971 Mach 1, Grabber Blue w/Argent stripes. Original 2V 351C Auto, Tilt, rear defog, Black Comfortweave Interior. Under restoration. Original colors, 4V 351C, 4-Speed, Spoilers, Magnums, Ram Air. All Ford parts.
Has anyone restored an old rotor as part of their restoration? I am trying to save money and want to know if anyone removes the scale from the cooling slots and hub area, then use cast blast or other paint on the non-wear parts of the rotor? Also, when storing for a long while during restoration, how do you keep the machined rotor surfaces from rusting?

I did just that recently to both front rotors on my '73 convertible. I pulled them both off, removed the bearings and races from the centers, wiped out all the grease and then blasted them in my cabinet. Then I applied high heat primer, then high heat black. Wiped the center areas down, pressed in new races, greased up the bearings and reassembled them on the spindles. I haven't drive the car except around the property at my storage unit trying to diagnose other issues, but they still look good. We are in a high humidity area in Houston, Texas.

If really worried about the machined surfaces, just dust them with a light coat of spray can paint, that will coat them to prevent rust and then when you drive it, the paint should burn off easily.

This is what I would do but after all was said and done, I would have them machined to insure that they are not warped.

 
I would be concerned about the paint clogging the pads. For storage, I've used cooking spray on the bare metal and then stored in a sealed plastic bag. I used some lacquer thinner to clean off the oil when doing my final assembly.
