Hello I own a 73 mustang q code, this is a question concerning exhaust. The car had the original system but was very rusted with pinholes. I am looking for a one that’s very factory sounding, like new. Thanks!

Hi Mike, It seems like you have a nice pretty much original car there. With a convertible I would think you would want a factory sounding car.
When new members join the Forum, it's nice for them to go to Introductions and introduce themselves and with a few pics of their ride. If you could do that, we'd all love to see what yer up too.

Wow… I’ve ordered two complete systems from them and the fit was well, almost perfect. Certainly, I did not have to add any metal to have it fit. I would have contacted them and I’m sure they would have made it right?
 
NPD carried the correct factory style mufflers with the mounting brackets on the back to attach the inverted "Y" type hanger, pipes, and hangers in stainless for my 73 vert. THey sound great... not real loud, yet a nice aggressive sound. Many of the resellers do not have the correct mufflers.

I purchased a dual exhaust system from Precision.. Price was right and shipping was fast. However the two exhaust pipes were a foot too short, which (I believe his name is Steve) sent two replacement pipes which did fit.. The job set me back about 10 days.. Secondly, the H-Pipe was low on one side and did not match the exhaust manifolds. He said to just bend it to fit, which I did, and all was well.. In my opinion, matching the original specifications on parts for these older vehicles is difficult. Most, if not all of the technical information is long gone so the sellers do the best they can with what they have..
 
I had mine made at a custom exhaust shop. The mufflers are Flowmaster FX, so the inverted Y brackets had to be welded on. They could have done a better job of that, but otherwise the fit is good.
Custom exhaust is another option. Just buy the mufflers you want and have them fit them.
 
I ordered a Precision Exhaust system for my Mach 1. While it came quickly, I was disappointed with the fit. See photo below. I had to add two inches to the left tailpipe to get it to fit properly. I was not happy.

Do you have the staggered shocks? Most places that I have looked only seem to make kits for the non staggered shocks, so it would make sense if you have to modify one side.
 
I actually ordered both the staggered and non-staggered shock tail pipes from Precision last year. Unfortunately, I went in another direction with the size and didn't use if anyone is interested.....

Here is some pictures from the car, currently it’s in primer with a mach-1 style hood. It’s a very solid original car. I am planning to keep it whimbeldon white. It’s been of the road since 1991 and has been well stored. its the numbers matching 4-v motor and nothing has changed, still the 4300-d auto lite. the valve covers and air cleaner have been re-done. I have some more technical stuff in my profile.
 
Do you have the staggered shocks? Most places that I have looked only seem to make kits for the non staggered shocks, so it would make sense if you have to modify one side.
My 73 is a staggered shock car and that seems to be the issue with finding the right one i’m assuming custom is the best way to go.
 
Well Mike, that does look like a nice find there. The engine and bay look really nice.
On the exhaust and if you go custom, make sure that the driver side tail pipe over the axle is bent high enough and placed to one side of the brake line fitting on the axle, When mine was done, the pipe ended up directly over the fitting and without realizing it at the time, the brake line actually hit the exhaust, bending the line. No damage was done fortunately, but something to be aware of.

I’ve got a ‘72 Mach 1 in Wimbledon white. I’m definitely changing it to Grabber Blue. I could never understand why someone would want a fast car in white but one sold this week at Mecum for a nice price. Hard to imagine but it was the 70’s. Same reason it had a ginger interior. I guess that’s part of the resto process. Mine was missing all the typical Mach 1 features I like such as rear spoiler, window louvers, or even the Mach 1 stripes. No chin spoiler either. We can make them our own. It just costs a fortune. As a ‘72 it didn’t have working ram air but the hood had too much rust so I changed out. Ram air parts aren’t cheap. I was just happy to find one I could work with for a decent price. Love your engine and compartment. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
