My Car
73 mustang baby blue with clevo 351
Ok so car is coming along well. Running nicely now. Only issue I’ve got that I’m trying to sort is a knock or rattle noise seemingly coming from the front suspension on the left hand corner.

On a nice road there is no issue but when on a bumpy road it is a constant noise on every little bump. I replaced the upper and lower control arms and that sorted all my squeaky suspension noises but this bloody rattle is still there.

Any suggestions please?

Cheers
Jase

Look for the simple things first - check anti-sway bar links, if too loose, they can rattle a little.

And the swaybar to frame mounts. A little shrinkage in the rubber will produce some play that disappears the mount you raise the car.
Or, as happened on a car I worked on, the new replacement rubber mounts were for a slightly larger bar.

Don't you just hate rattles or thing that go bang, but only at times depending on the road you're on?
On my car, I get this loud bang sound from (I think) the front left as well. This is only present when I go over say, a manhole cover that is raised too much. All the front end is new and nothing seems to be loose or otherwise faulty. I guess the only way is to put the car on a hoist and literally go over everything, one part at a time.
Not to make this about my car, but it seems similar to your issue. Hope you find it so I may be able to find what causes my noise too.

A couple of rattles, bangs and squeaks I have fixed on my new suspension over the past 12-18 months.

Strut rod bush crumpled on LH side creating loud metalic bang under brakes or rough surfaces. Poor quality rubber. The strut rod bush had a piece missing on the underside causing the strut rod to hit the mount. It was not easy to see hidden behind the large washers.

LH Lower control arm bush outer steel case loose in control arm. Poor quality repro. Would cause metalic "noises" mainly on rough surfaces & turning.

Remaining squeaks turned out to be the front sway bar bushes, well lubed. I have since upgraded the sway bar (good USA build) that came with non-lube bushes. No more squeaks and much better handling.

I had checked several times for the source of the problems, loose bolts, brakes, shock absorbers, etc. The above issues were only identified on closer inspection.

I experienced the same annoying rattle in the front that I couldn’t initially find, over our lovely potholes, searched and rubber hammer-pounded, and then finally...the rubber sleeves that the caliper slide pins reside in were completely deteriorated or missing so the moveable caliper assembly would bang up and down on the exposed metal...O’Reily auto parts had them in stock (warehouse) $4 for 4 and greased and replaced, rattle gone forever...hope you find your rattle

Thks for all the input, have had my car since middle of june, 2023, have had, front end done, replaced ball joints and tie rod ends, aligned old fashioned way, but still have the right front rattle when going over man hole covers on resealed cracks in road, but goes away if i am on the brakes, my thought is the caliber or pad springs now, car went thru a frame on restoration, have found all sorts of loose bolts, wiring / charging issues, etc, car has been getting quieter all the time, and is now great to drive, with the exception of the right front rattle, will check that caliper pad issue this weekend thks

You wouldn't happen to rem part number would you, I believe I have the same issue with my 72 mach

The slide pin bushings are Raybestos H5200

You can buy them seperately, or in the caliper hardware kit.

Thks, found the caliber kit at O' Rielys should have tomorrow, thks again, what I have found is a lot of little things that wern't done right the first time, add up after a while, finish this and put new Ujoints on Driveshaft, and should just take care of about 98 percent of the rattles. who ever did restoration on it, did alot of things well, but I think he got anxious to drive it and slip shotted other things. But she will be as good as new when I get done with her! thks again!

Here is the part info you needed…amazingly easy fix for that ”drive you crazy rattle”IMG_0068.png

thks for all the info, believe it of not, when I pulled the wheel, looked at the caliber, the bushings were there, I tapped the caliber with a dead blow hammer, heard the noise, pulled the first pin, and you wont believe this, whoever replaced pads etc, pur bushings on end of pin, instead of pushing it thru the mounting bracket!, I had ordered the whole caliber kit, just in case rattle springs were missing etc, Installed new bushings, quiet as a church mouse! Thks again, hope this helps someone else too

Where are you located? If close enough to our place we can do an acoustical microphone array to zero in on the cause of the noise, unless you find it viq close inspection following the prior suggestions in this thread.
