I'm in the market for a really nice (#2 or better) 71 Boss 351 or Mach 1 with 429 in either Light Pewter or Calypso Coral. Numbers matching, rare options and correct restoration ideal. If you can help please let me know.
 
FYI - Calypso Coral wasn't a standard color on the 71s. For reds, one could get Bright Red (code 3) or Maroon Metallic (code B). Calypso Coral would have been a special order paint, as it was still available on Ford Trucks.
 
They made 4 special paint Calypso Coral Boss 351's which I believe was the only orange shade available. I used to own the only one with white interior and it was loaded to the hilt in excellent original survivor condition with 100k miles. Sold twice in the last 10 years. The only one with vermillion interior also sold in the last 10 years. I think I heard Bob Perkins owned a black interior one. Bright red cars with original paint formula like my 73 Convertible almost look like orange in the sun. Might consider them as they can be found.

That's what I'm looking for but in the US
I bought my 65 Corvette 327/365 Coupe out of Vaughn, Ontario, it was no big deal to get it back into the states and well worth it with the exchange rate. My wife and I made a nice trip of it, stayed at a bed and breakfast on the Canadian side in Niagara Falls. Here’s a pic of it in the warehouse where it was stored. It probably was the cheapest car in there surrounded by Ferraris, GT 40s, a 63 split Window, Lambo‘s etc. . A very memorable trip!

There are two Grabber blue on Ebay. What is your budget?
I’m aware of those. I’m looking for a private party deal from a fellow enthusiast who also loves these cars. Not looking to pad a dealers pocket book just cause they want to flip something and make $20K-$30K more than they paid for it at some auction. I don’t have a set budget that depends on the caliber of the car and restoration level.

Most of the dealers are selling consignment cars. I have always gotten better deals from dealers, and have been screwed over by private party guys who don't have a reputation to protect. Nowadays with the internet reviews, a customer can ruin a dealer for life in 5 minutes, try that with a privaate sale ! I did, and eBay erased my bad feedback and after hearing how this guy screwed me, said they wish the could reinstate my feedback, or allow me to review again, but they don't have a mechanism for that. And their eBay protection is BS as well. I have bought three cars from dealers over the internet, without going to see the cars, and all three were as stated in the ads. On the other hand, I've had two cars purchased over the internet from private parties, both time the cars were grossly misrepresented. I'll buy from dealer WAY before any private party from now on.

I've bought from both. It simply depends on the car and price. Dealers don't aways know how rare of a car they might have. I will never consign a car with a dealer though. Sometimes only one person has the car you are looking for if it has a certain rarity and you might have to wait over 5 years for one as special or change your expectations. I bought my 73 Mach 1 from a used car dealer in 2002. It was a strange experience as the place and people unintentionally appeared as a 70's time warp situation at this small dealership in San Fernando Valley. I was happy paying $12,000 for a loaded to the hilt Q code 4sp 2 owner car with a power ASC sunroof originally from Beverly Hills Ford on a great color combo with tons of paperwork and drove it 400 miles home. I might have paid $2000 over an appraised value or what an average optioned one could have been had for, but I have never seen a Mach 1 I Iike better even a big block one.
 
Like Greg and many others, I've had similar experiences. I've had good and bad experiences, with both types of seller, and for me it came down to my own research and knowledge. I've bought and sold many cars, both on the internet and thru a private sale.

It's an oxymoron, but one of the best & worst purchases I ever made was from a dealership in another state on eBay. On Christmas Eve (2002), I bought a "lightly" used early production 2001 Yellow Z06 Corvette. A couple days later I flew one-way to finalize the purchase and drive it home. Sadly, when the salesman met me at the airport, he immediately began to make excuses for the car during the ride to the dealership. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach and my worst fears were realized when we arrived at the dealership and I inspected the car. It was not as advertised.

After about an hour long discussion with the sales manager, I was offered a fully loaded and second stickered "arrest me" Red 2002 35th Anniversary Edition Camaro SS/LE SLP coupe from the show room floor. It was originally listed for much more than the purchase of the used Z06, with every performance and handling option from the SLP facility in Toms River, NJ. Well, the car was amazing and I made a stupid-good deal on the SS. I drove it home and it was my main open road racer for many years of service. Lesson learned and a happy ending, all in the same transaction. Here's a money shot from the show room floor.....

Trust your own discernment of the red flags and believe in the way the car presents itself. I've trusted my head and I've trusted my heart with cars and TBH, it always works out. When dealing with a classic car purchase, it's hard to discount the nostalgia. It sounds like you're in a great place because you know what you want, have some purchase options, and you have the means to follow thru to get it.

No value in arguing about individual experiences I suppose. I've bought a lot of vehicles in my day, probably over 80 at least, and I have never been able to "Buy the seller". I suppose that means that if you like the seller, you buy the car. But in two of my bad experiences with private individuals, I really thought these guys were good car dudes, who I would be friends with for life. In both cases, they immediately changed once they were paid. One guy even laughed at me, and told me how dumb I was to trust him, and I was dumb not to come see the car. This was after my wife spotted some things in the pictures, and we asked him about it and he flat denied there was anything there, just a reflection she was seeing. eBay Buyer Protection was useless by the way.

My advice, buy an airplane ticket if it's a private sale. It saved me $7,500 off the previously agreed upon price on my 65 327/365 C2 Coupe, after using my bore scoop to look inside the birdcage, the frame, and through the spark plug holes at the cylinder walls. It was well worth the day lost at work and the cost of the flight.

Now on the other hand, I have bought our 2009 Hummer H3T Alpha Adventure, a 2012 Cadillac CTS V Wagon, a 2018 Ford Raptor, and our 1957 Chevy Nomad, all from out of state dealers, without going to see the cars in person, and in all four cases, being super happy with the deals and the condition of the vehicles, all by asking one question taught to me by a guy from Maine who was buying a used boat from me, ( I own a boat dealership ). He, ( and now I ) asked, just send me pictures of the bad stuff. I did that for him, and he had no disappointments, and all four of these dealers did the same for me, and I was equally satisfied. Again, these dealers, just like my dealership, cannot afford to do bad by anyone in this age of the internet. Your reputation can be destroyed in very little time.

Now, it'll admit to the one case of a dealer who tried to fool me an a 70 Buick GS convertible, but as soon as I called him on it, and told him that the car had been a Hurricane Sandy victim, and that it was confirmed to me by Haggerty Insurance, he immediately refunded my money and paid transportation both ways to get the car back to his dealership in Virginia. That was help from a forum like this, the Buick V8 forum, where after I posted pics of our new prized possession , a forum member PMed me that he thought he knew the history, and to give him a call if I wanted to know some things he knew about it, if it was the car he was thinking of. After a few questions, he said, yup, that's the car, and here's the real story. That's why these forums are so valuable to us all.

Why? If it's a nice car, what's the difference??!
Weather, Logistics, Complications, Paperwork, Inexperience with the process, Don't have a passport so can't go inspect first, probably many other things that I have no idea are issues.....
