    Gas Cap

My '72 doesn't have that bailing wire on the gas cap, and as far as I know never did. My '65 did, but I cut it off because it was always jamming up when you went to put the cap back on. I have a Scott Drake on there now, and it didn't come with a bailing wire. Fits just fine, with the pony...

    Grey smoke...

After about one month? I'd be amazed if mine didn't express some dissatisfaction about being left idle for so long! As long as it went away, I'd say that's to be expected after prolonged disuse.

    Shifter pointer adjustment

My FMX does the same thing. The only way I could find to adjust it is from the linkage underneath. Unfortunately, that also changes where the shifter detents are in relation to the gear selection at the transmission. I gave up on it, as I'd rather have everything else working right.

    Fan belts

CJ Pony Parts has a great application guide, though it is difficult to find on their website. Here it is: http://www.cjponyparts.com/images/art/Mustang_Belt_Chart_65_73.pdf

    Hot water control valve

72's with factory air use vacuum controls. There should be a small vacuum line with a purple stripe coming through the firewall. This is what connects to the water valve. If you have a Shop Manual, see page 36-32-03 of Volume III, though the water valve pictured (labelled "4") looks nothing...

    Service and Repair Manuals

I have the set on CD from Forel (as well as a paper set) and have encountered no difficulties in using it or printing pages from it.

Get a wiring diagram. They are not included in the Shop Manual.

    DVCV and Oil Cap hoses

The PCV inlet hose should be connected to the air cleaner (for factory closed emissions systems), but the outlet hose (from the PCV valve) goes to the carb or carb spacer. You should have fresh air going in one valve cover and crankcase vapors going out the other. Pre-emmisions open systems...

    Car won't turn off

I have had this problem a few times before. In every case, it's been the starter solenoid. If you get an internal short between the battery post and the "I" terminal, you can't shut the car off. This circuit is normally closed only during starting to bypass the resister wire and provide a...

    DVCV and Oil Cap hoses

Actually, the hose from the oil cap PCV valve should connect to a port at the bottom of the carb or carb spacer. You don't want to run it straight to the manifold, or you will lean out whatever cylinder is on the runner that the port is in. This is because, unlike vacuum lines for brake...

    Missing hoses 1972

DVCV - Top goes to carburetor for ported vacuum, middle to distributor, and bottom to intake for manifold vacuum. At least that's how it is on my 351C of the same year.

Does Your Timing Pointer Look Like This?

Sorry to bring back such an old thread, but I have been away from the forum for a while. (Long story.) My timing pointer looks like Wolverine's, and I was wondering if anyone knew the purpose of the ring on the extension below the actual pointer. The P/N is D2AE-6023-BA, if that helps any.

    Ignition Problem

TommyK is right. Mine started doing just that, then I rebuilt the starter and it has been perfect ever since. One of the brushes was worn irregularly and was jamming in the "track" when it got hot.

    Vacuum port for distributor?

That should go to the DVCV on the water pump, to switch from ported vacuum to manifold vacuum at idle should the engine start to overheat. On a '72 351C, it also had a T-fitting to a vacuum control valve on the drivers' side valve cover. This was part of the IMCO system which would switch on...

    Distributor and Ignition Info Thread

I still run points in my '72 with no problems at all. If you want to get them working right, forget about setting the gap and check them with a dwell meter and remote start switch. The gap thing only works if the cam lobes are not worn, and the dwell angle is what is directly effecting the...
