I only buy used cars. When I do, I look at the long-term reliability of the cars first and then look at the rest. I have used consumer report guides as one of the tools to check for reliability. If you get a reliable car that is known to have very few problems you will less likely have to deal with repairs or warranty. I consider a reliable car the one that lasts 150k-200k miles without needing major repairs beyond maintenance. Brands like Toyota and Honda are generally very reliable, but within any brands there are better platforms than others so research on that front is important. One last thing, yes, a reliable car will be generally more expensive up front.

Steve,
An interesting read and insight.
I don't think we have much in the way of "aftermarket warranties" here in Canada, that or we just don't see them advertised. but I've often wondered about the ones we do see on US TV. They all seem to be too good to be true for sure and suck thousands of people in yearly.
If a person put the same money into an account, chances are they would be able to pay for repairs as needed and at the end of the day, still have money in THEIR own bank.
Now Steve, have a coffee and calm down eh!
Hello Geoff,
Can you say a delayed response? (Just a few days). Yeah, right now, all I seem to see is all these aftermarket warranty commercials promising the sun shining on your rear end while they slip their hands into your wallet. And, dont forget the campfire song!
I'm sure Chuck never dreamed all that he would find out about aftermarket and OE manufacturer warranties and would probably like to forget.
And after all that ranting, I took your advice and had a coffee, read my latest edition of Mustang Times, and calmed down! 😄

Steve, that's too funny!
I don't know about you and everybody else, but it always seems like EVERYTHING has a 1 year warranty and everything you buy breaks at 13 months.............. just like the manufacturers planned. A $1200 Whirlpool Cabrio washing machine we bought is a prime example. 13 months and it cost us $450 to repair. It has cost us mega bucks since, but at least now I know how to repair it myself. Junk, nothing but junk.
OK we're way off track now, but................

Does someone have experience with OEM or aftermarket extended warranties? I'm considering buying one for my 2020 Edge ST. I keep new cars a LONG time. The car is rolling LAN of electronics, sensors, $1700 headlights, turbocharged, and AWD. Soooo many expensive things that can fail. Some say the Ford ESP is the only one worth buying and other seems happy with aftermarket plans. Is it a waste of money? Do any of them go more than 5 years after factory 3 year warranty expires? Any and all input is appreciated. Chuck
I bought the Ford mechanical extended warranty for my new at the time, 2019 F-150 3.5 Eco Boost. I purchased the 2 year warranty which gives me a total of five years mechanical coverage. The eco engine is great, but..., the death rattle aspect of the chain has always been in the back of my mind. I do regular oil changes at 5k Km's (3k miles) as I believe this is one of the major issues with these engines giving problems. I normally don't buy extended warranties as I believe that if something will break it will happen out of the box or within the first year. But, I relented this time as I really wanted to buy this truck. The warranty cost me approx. $2k Cdn $$ as I recall, a reasonable price for two years additional coverage...

I spent too much time diving into this question. In the end I decided to pass on the extended warranty. Chuck

This may be a little later than desirable, but I just came across the following YouTube link, watched it, I decided to add this reply to this thread re: the following web site for folks to watch and listen to if they are interested in this subject (Extended Warranty, specifically Third Party Extended Warranties).

Steve Lehto, who created and posted the YouTube video in the link below, covers all kinds of interesting legal cases, often relating to the automotive industry. For what it may be worth, I find his videos to be informative, fairly humorous, and well worth it for me to subscribe to his channel so I can see what new shenanigans folks are coming up with, especially with respect to automobile manufacturers and the automotive industry i general (although he covers all kinds of other issues as well). With no further further delay, here it is:
