1971 Mustang Convertible
My 1971 Mustang convertible came with Trim code CW which is white, knit vinyl comfortweave material. I have seen a striped, black and white pattern on the center section for the CW trim code (see pic below from Stocktrader). My convertible still has the original upholstery and the center section is solid white. When I sent away for a 1971 convertible CW trim comfortweave sample from SMS, they also sent me a solid white sample (see pic below).

So was the white, comfortweave CW trim code for convertibles different between years? Were they different between body styles? I think the CW trim in 1971 was available only on convertibles or fastbacks.

Which comfortweave material is right for my 1971 convertible?

Thanks.

Hello, 71convert,
The sample sent by SMS is correct for your trim code CW. I've looked at many of the supposedly"Authoritative" sites and found a lot of incorrect information. Understandably confusion can also stem from constantly updated, revised, hard-to-read and conflicting info in Ford printed material. I tell people Ford was in the business of mass-producing cars and trucks and not show cars. So they, like the other auto manufacturers, probably didn't think much about what we would be dealing with 50+ years later, while we wonder what they were thinking!

The trim code for your 71 vert is CW, a white comfort weave also used for the sport roof. The Mach 1 is 5W which includes the grey/silver accent panels and all-white comfort weave.
Now, the confusing trim codes. The '72 Vert white interior is also CW but includes black mixed with the white comfort weave material. The '72 white Mach 1 Sport interior for (02) Sportsroof and Boss and (05) Mach 1 also included the new black and white comfort weave material but was trim code GW.
I have no idea why they changed the code for the '72 Mach 1 style white interior but used the '71 CW code for '72 verts even though the material changed in '72. I guess the "Suits" at Ford decided they didnt need my permission when assigning trim codes!

The '72 CW and GW trim codes were carried over and used for 1973 applications. I was informed by a fellow forum member a couple of years ago that all of the looms to produce the comfort weave material got destroyed in a fire in 1973. So as the inventory of comfort weave was exhausted, Ford substituted a plain vinyl, and the trim codes were adjusted with a third digit.
