Hey gang! A guy just changed trans pan gasket on his 73 351 C6. Getting conflicting info on fluid capacity. Any fellers got a number? Thanks!!

I did not drain the converter just dropped the pan. A guy was guessing about seven qts or so!

It has been many years, decades, since I drained trhe pan only for a C6, but it seems to me I would use 4-5 quarts. Start at 4, then with engine running in Park/Neutral, add as needed until it comes to its proper level on the dipstick. You do not want to overfill those auto trannies. Usually with converter drain it would take about 12 quarts. More for deep aftermarket pans or add-on external oil coolers.

I don’t think you get all the fluid out from just removing the pan. I’m not talking the converter also but some fluid that doesn’t drain out from the pan removal. I drained mine before removing the trans completely for a rebuild. And when I stood it up on its face more fluid came out of the dip stick hole. So just saying do what the others have suggested and start with 4 quarts or so.

All depends exactly which pan as there are a few different factory types. Best method is verifying correct dipstick level then fill. Anything else is just a guess

+1, making sure to use the correct procedure to check the capacity. Usually with the car and fluid at operating temperature and the engine running. Some owners manuals will say to be in a specific gear, or to work through all of the different gear selector positions, then back to park, leave it running, and check the fluid.

Well a guy needs some input!! Finally got the rig started and run for about five minutes. Shut it off to make an adjustment (darned won’t start again) any way next am a guy found a large puddle of atf on the floor!! If I over flowed it would blow out the pan gasket?? Brand new gasket and all!

Are you sure it didn't puke out the dipstick tube? The full level is slightly above your pan gasket anyway, so that gasket is either good or it's not, over full or not. Once that stuff comes raining down it gets everywhere, and where it's actually coming from can be misleading. Any time I've overfilled mine it comes out the dipstick tube. It might even be at the base of the dipstick tube if it's not sealed great.
