In my intro I said I recently picked up a "set" of 4V close chambers but now have concerns and questions. First of all the casting numbers don't match... After doing some poking around and talking briefly with Pete's Garage, he didn't seem overly concerned. I checked the cc's on both heads and one does have larger chambers by about 4.5 cc's. Is it possible these heads came from the same car or was one of them replaced?

The casting numbers are DOAE-N with a date code of 9M5 and D1AE-GE- 0L12.

The readings I got were much closer to 64 than 74.5 cc on the D1AE-GE so I don't think they're from a Boss motor. We're they machined in the past? The problem is I do not know any of the history on these heads. A guy I see periodically at work said he had a set of close chambers and he's never going to use them, I bought em, that all I know.

What is your opinion on this and what would you do?

I also have 2 questions, 1st, are these heads anything special? (To me, at this stage All 4V's are special). Should I use them in the 73 vert or save them for a different car? "If" there is another car...
Thanks,
Jerry

I'm glad you asked for opinions LOL. Personally I wouldn't run non-matching heads (as in chamber volume, valve size etc. not casting numbers). I've personally decided to use 2V heads for the street, as the huge flow 4V heads need high RPM to outperform the 2V heads IMO. With all that being said, I have a couple sets of 4V head that I'll never let go of just in case I decide to build another top end performance engine LOL.

Looking at my listing in MustangTek.com, I do not see heads D1AE-GE only GA and with a casting date of November 12 1970, I'm pretty sure you misread the casting code. N heads are an earlier Cleveland head and higher comp ratio (supposedly). Those heads you have are 11 months apart, so no not off the same engine. I agree, I wouldn't run mismatched heads.

The D0AE-N are a 1970 model year head, the D1AE-GA are 1971 model year. Yes, the chambers are different sizes as D0 is 63cc nominal, D1 is 67cc. They were cast nearly a year apart, so they didn't leave the factory on the same engine. It is possible that the D1 head was used as a service replacement on a 1970 M-code car.

I'd try to horse trade for a matching head.

I totally agree on every point. Unless you are track racing and need to be constantly at highway RPM stick with 2v heads. You will be much happier.

Too bad you're not local...we could do some trading. I have an unmatched pair of D0AE-N an D1AE-GA....looking for another D0AE-N head.
Suggestion; each of you crate up one head and ship it via FedEx or similar to the other person. The shipping charge will be your payment so to speak.
A few years ago, I shipped two heads to Vancouver across Canada for $100 each in 2 separate crates. Total of $200.00.

If you are on the same "side" of the country (East or West) you can ship fairly cheaply via Fastenal's shipping services: https://www.fastenal.com/fast/blue-lane-freight
This means that Basstrix will need to find a Fastenal in New Mexico.

Pirate ship is definitely the best way to ship and save good money. Tom Kosiara in Texas turned me onto them. I shipped a head to him for about 1/2 the usual UPS price.

Take those heads to a quality machine shop, tell them same engine and get professionals involved. Possible machine to same size chambers, or they may have a matching core head. Those solutions will not be found on the web.

Has anyone resized chambers before?

Could be done on a CNC mill, but set-up might be expensive. You would at least get all 8 chambers the exact same size. The cc chamber size is a mean size as they are castings, so could vary.
Some shops may already have a set up for this process.

I grew up in a machine shop, I understand that it's possible. My question was has anyone here or known by someone here that's went to the trouble?

Countless thousands of heads have been cc'd and adjusted/altered to meet various required parameters. Matter of fact I altered my last three sets of after market heads.
Big difference between tweaking the same casting and making a totally different castings match. I wouldn't imagine imagine a quality casting would be 4.5cc per cylinder off. That's more than 1/4 cubic inch each chamber!

I checked all 4 chambers on each head and saw little difference in cc between the chambers. The difference is between head #1 & #2. The chart on Mustang-tech shows DOEA-N having 62.8cc, D1AE-GE has 2 listings, I think I have the 64cc.
I may have done the volume check incorrectly by installing a sparkplug in the head but it was a consistent test.
Now why the difference between the 2 heads wasn't closer to 1.2 I do not know.
Btw I had no intention of installing the heads until they are machined to make them right.
