I am way late to this party. I wish I would have found this thread 6 months ago. I did not have the option of buying one from someone. I saw one on ebay a few months ago for about $300. I thought that was a little crazy for a light and I wanted to spend that money on other stuff. I purchased a light online that came off of a 73 mercury cougar and cannibalized the electrical hookups which (I believe) are similar to the mustang. I designed it all on the computer and uploaded the file to xometry.com and for about $45 they 3d printed it and sent it back to me. I dont have a 3d printer yet. I went with black ABS plastic to be a little heat resistant. The lens which scott drake reproduces fits perfectly in it. I found a rocker switch on amazon that fit what I needed and it works great.

PM me if you are interested and I can email you the file for you to print yourself. Like I said before I do not have a 3d printer and I won't be printing these for anyone. I'm not in this to make money, just trying to help out anyone who needs a map light like I did.

Do I understand you correctly that you bought one from a 71-73 Cougar because you didn't have one?  Or does the Mustang version not lend itself to a bulb upgrade?

So if I have one already, seems I just need to change the switch and leds.

I bought the one from the cougar with the intention of taking the electrical wires and hookups to use on the part that I designed. The cougar map light assembly was about 2 inches short of the empty space and did not have a switch. I designed the part after that part so I could use the electrical clips and from what I can tell its very similar to the mustang on the inside. I did upgrade the bulb to an LED and then the designed part included a spot for the switch that I chose. Hope that makes sense

Excellent!

I just noticed you used a rocker switch rather than the cranky slide switch that would have been original. Brilliant choice.

Power mirror spec? Do tell, good friend... Please do tell... Please

Hi Gil,

Yes, proud to say, i was the world's first person to come up with a power mirror invention for our 1,2,3 Mustangs.
My idea was to invent and produce the power mirrors for myself alone, but decided it was a great idea to pass all my plans and specs onto the Forum as well, so all members could benefit and make them like i did for themselves. Sadly, my plans have met with a luke warm response on the Forum over the years, as i think most members consider the large amount or scope of work too much for them to take on. I understand that.

Anyway, here are the Forum links to the tutorials 1 to 10 covering the whole project. Enjoy!!

Wow, very nice Greg! That’s next-level fabrication right there.
Thank you Sir!
Yeah, it took a total of around one year to do all the R&D plus the production and fabrication to reach the end working product. Also, the whole project set me back around the $2,000 Au mark for parts and materials. I had to experiment with certain mirror motors, switches and Mustang mirror body housings.
Greg.
