For all you Edelbrock Carb fans

Since I started messing with cars in the early/mid 70s I have used Motorcraft, Holley, Edelbrock and Summit carbs. I was fed up with Holley's being temperamental and alternately leaking or drying out so I switched to Edelbrock which is basically an improved Carter. The E'brocks were good and...

    Tachometer hook up

Your factory tach does not read the signal that the MSD R2R puts out. The MSD hook-up (grey wire) is a square  wave voltage signal created by the coil field collapsing and is picked up from the coil - post. The grey wire is a synthetic signal that emulates the square wave.  Your factory tach is...

Looking for indicator light bracket or panel idea

How about the flat piece of the radio bezel above the radio? That piece is reproduced, so get one (or a used one) and put two downward facing LEDs in there aligned under the appropriate gauges. You would glance at your gauges/clock/radio as part of your scan but a bright glow may catch your...

That was a temperature controlled advance (actually ******) used as part of the emissions setup. It really isn't necessary unless you are in an emissions required area. Just make sure that the outer port you are using works and is connected to a ported, not full, vacuum source.

    Tree Rats

I've had squirrels attack my daily drivers and my tractor. An old farmer at the local car shop told me he had the same problem. John Deere sold him some wire with cayenne or some kind of pepper in the insulation. Sounded like a good idea to me but he just laughed and said we have Mexican...

Check that your vacuum advance is hooked and working.

    Wiring problems Tachometer Mustang -73

Yikes! $300 for a used Faria tach board? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you could have bought an entire working tach for less. I'll bet it came from SC.... Gluing the tach pointer on is most likely going to upset the calibration depending on just where the break/repair is. Use as...

Factory Tach in non tach car with MSD tach adapter

The tach has two wires, one from the ignition switch and one to the coil + side. The tach wire that originally went to the coil + terminal connects to the 8920 RED wire. The 8920 BLACK wire goes to ground. The 8920 WHITE wire goes to the Mallory tach signal port. Unless you are running a...

    Wiring problems Tachometer Mustang -73

The 'pink' resistor wire should be between the tach and the firewall. Here's a general overview of the tach wiring: Ignition switch 'on' -> tach -> resistor wire -> ignition coil (+ side). I don't have the specifics on a '73 as far as what colors or where each wire is, hopefully...

    Wiring problems Tachometer Mustang -73

The resistor wire should be about 1.5 ohms. If it is bypassed the tach will read high until the tach dies (too much current = shortened life span). If you add more resistance the tach will read low. The tach can fail on the electrical or mechanical side. The movement (mechanical) is normally...

    Pertronix Ignition problems

Dumb question, but did you remember to install the little black magnet sleeve over the distributor shaft lobes? I forgot one once.

    hei

Sounds like you have 12V at key on but not at start. Factory Ford tach will not work connected GM tach port.

How did you choose the non original Ford color to paint your 71-73 Mustang?

I drove around to car dealers and looked at the vehicles until I found a couple colors/shades that I liked, then went back a few times at different lighting until I found the one I wanted.

how can I Bench test a starter

Sounds like it needs the Bendix (drive assembly) replaced. I had to do that on a few starters back in the 70s/80s (before rebuilt starters became dirt cheap). https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/mercury,1971,cougar,7.0l+429cid+v8,1197828,electrical,starter+drive,4172

    HEI distributor

I have to look at a lot of different ignition signals. By far the 'dirtiest' is the Pertronix. Cleanest are MSD (computer generated) and Duraspark, but the MSD box pulls ALOT of voltage as RPM increases. GM HEI modules are dirty too. So much so that they had to run a signal filter on them from...

can someone identify this headlight socket....

That's a standard OEM sealed beam connector. Factory stock #6014 or Halogen replacements will fit.

Nice find! I have been looking for a Lake Motors (in Salt Lake City) dealership appliqué for years.
