Welcome from Phoenix!. Thank you for saving that Mach 1. You've taken on a large effort and it takes a special car guy who can see the potential in some of these cars.

High Idle speed after fixing accel pump on Holley carb. Looking for ideas while I think this through.

The rear carb was just barely 'catching' on opening by hand (no linkage). I messed around with this for a couple hours before I finally swapped it to the front. It doesn't catch in the front and the other carb doesn't catch in the rear. Must be just a bit of difference between the two. I...

High Idle speed after fixing accel pump on Holley carb. Looking for ideas while I think this through.

See pics. One is with the carbs on, no linkage connected. The other is with the rear carb off and 'plugs' in place of the carb. My next steps after successful idle with just center carb: Put one outboard carb on in the rear (easiest). Car idled a bit higher, I did not try to adjust so that...

High Idle speed after fixing accel pump on Holley carb. Looking for ideas while I think this through.

I am writing all of this for my own benefit, both in thinking it through and in 5 years when I have troubles again I can refer back to this thread! Okay, pulled the carbs. Nothing obvious on the outboards, the plates are closed as far as they can be. I went to the hardware store and got 4...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

I am messing with my engine too and have moved initial timing from 15 degrees advanced to some value close to or after TDC. The engine will idle with any of these settings, I didn't say it would run good but it will idle. The initial range of timing an engine will idle in is rather impressive...

High Idle speed after fixing accel pump on Holley carb. Looking for ideas while I think this through.

At it again this morning. Plugged every vacuum port. (PCV, transmission ,Brake, distributor, vacuum gauge, everything including the outboard carb lines) Turned idle speed screw down all of the way down (counter clockwise). Way past where the plate stopped moving. Confirmed outboard carbs are...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Did you pull the distributor to fix it? If you did, then as mentioned above, you need to double check you are at TDC of the compression stroke. These will run 180 degrees off but will backfire (ask me how I know).

High Idle speed after fixing accel pump on Holley carb. Looking for ideas while I think this through.

Still working on it. More clues: When I remove the hose PCV from the carb base there is little to no change in the idle speed, even if I use my finger to plug and unplug the port When I remove the brake booster hose from the manifold port there is a noticeable change. When I was checking the...

High Idle speed after fixing accel pump on Holley carb. Looking for ideas while I think this through.

I thought I was so smart. My car normally starts with one pump of the gas. When it didn't and I noticed an off idle stumble while in park (I didn't drive it) I knew it was the accel pump. I look down the carb and it was confirmed. Replaced the accel pump and now I have a high idle speed...

    2000 Mustang Front end

I am not an expert but it seems to me that it will be difficult, time consuming, expensive and probably won't work well. You're suggesting the steering and suspension, possibly the subframe, not the body work correct?

    Mustang owner for 45 years

Picked up the 73 Mach 1 as my first car a month before I turned 16. Damn I was cool! It got wrecked 4 years later (drunk driver turned left in front of me) Replaced it a month later with my 73 Convertible. Still own that one. That puts me at 44 years owning a 71/73 and except for that month...

    More starting issues

That's great. But I am now confused on the symptoms. Your original post indicated that it would start and immediately turn off. Your updated post seems to indicate it only happens when 'cold'. I am not sure how much you know about old cars so bear with me. It is not normal to crank for 10...

    More starting issues

You'll find a multimeter an invaluable tool when trouble shooting electrical issues. They seem intimidating but are actually fairly easy to use with the majority of your car trouble shooting efforts being in either a volts or ohm reading. When in volts reading you connect one end to a ground...

My First Project - New Brake MC & Booster

Greetings. I don't 'torque' the MC nuts to a specific value. I just get tthem 'tight'. I have always found the booster job to be much easier if I remove the driver seat. it only takes a few seconds to remove the seat. When I install a MC I don't tighten it down until I have the brake lines...
