Loud Violent Clunk When Shifting FMX Into Gear. Any Transmission Experts?

I don’t know if you have had a chance to road test it. To continue on with Don’s idea of it being bad modulator. One sure fire indication the modulator is screwed up is if it downshifts “hard” as you slow down. The modulator actuates under high engine vacuum (like decelerating with the...

+1 on this. Don brings up a good one. The vacuum servo lowers line pressure under high vacuum (low load) conditions.

Interesting. I’d say it is worth draining the rear axle and taking a look. For what it is worth here are two videos. One is of the 9” in my mustang with 3.50 gears and a trutrac. Less than 1000 miles. Very little play compared to yours. (Top video with the aluminum bearing support) Other...

Loud Violent Clunk When Shifting FMX Into Gear. Any Transmission Experts?

I’d put it up in the air, disconnect the driveshaft at the rear axle and with the parking brake on see how many degrees (approx) play you have turning your pinion back and forth. Won’t cost anything

Loud Violent Clunk When Shifting FMX Into Gear. Any Transmission Experts?

That is wild. Is your idle RPM really 700? Do you have a Detroit locker in it? Reason I ask about the Detroit is that they have a clunk by design. It is normal with a Detroit to have a 60 degree ish amount of rotational slop between forward and reverse at the driveshaft. On the engine RPM...

Fitting for Ford P/S pump to a Borgeson gear box

I don’t know for a fact but that pump likely has a newer metric o-ring fitting. Post some better pics of the output port on the pump itself. Do you have a thread pitch gauge for metric? A caliper so you can measure the ID on the pump? Post up what the thread pitch is and the ID of the port...

New proportioning valve and problems !

Try bleeding the circuits again and then give the pedal a good stomp or two. Press on it like a deer jumped in front of your car.

Welcome, glad to see someone reviving a Grande!

Wild new computer controlled AFR system for carburetors.

I finally installed mine. First impressions are that it is worth it for idle control alone. Currently I have it in “RPM target” mode where it is trying to hold 800 rpm but is limited by how far it can open the IAC valve. I was able to crank the idle-ez closed on my Barry Grant carb and let...

    Aftermarket Seats

Recaro sliders. Brackets were purchased from Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley CA, I don’t recall the brand but they were not Recaro. Seat base was as low or possibly a little lower than stock.

    73 grande major roof problem

I bet that motorcity mustang or OMS has a coupe with a good roof. That will be major surgery. Most of the time the coupe roof is better than the Grande as it didn’t have vinyl sealing in moisture for decades. The trim attachment points can be spot welded on quite easily. Save the old roof...

What did you do to your car today?

Took the Mustang and Toyota to our local Father’s Day car show. Lots of variety, 150+ cars. Took it for a drive afterwards with one really nice full throttle whack.

What did you do today instead of working on your Mustang?

Those shoes are not nearly comfortable enough for “old guy” shoes.

    C4 Trans Modulator / 2 Vacuum Lines

What is your transmission doing? Shifting early, shifting late, shifting hard, soft? Shifting hard or soft at full throttle, hard or soft at light throttle? Not all of the modulators are adjustable, and even if they are you likely need to get one that operates at a lower vacuum if you have...

    FMX

Get a handheld mityvac pump and test the one you have. The modulator softens the shifts under lightly loaded (high vacuum) driving. If you have a bad vacuum leak, pinched or clogged hose / line it will present like a bad modulator.

    FMX

See below. The vacuum modulator should be chosen based off of your engine vacuum. How wild is your camshaft? https://7173mustangs.com/threads/fmx-valve-body-info.39371/
