    What engine?

I believe if the first number of the 6 digit VIN was a 1 or 2, it was a Ford and if it was a 5 it was a Lincoln or Mercury. Steve

Need some advice on 72 Mach I

When I restore a car, I do much of the work myself, except for spraying the paint because I don't have a paint booth. I touch every part in the car. If it has minimal rust and all the parts are there to start with, it costs me about $20K to do one, plus the cost of the car. I restore cars...

    Odd Color Combos

Unfortunately, it's a project car, sitting in the air on my car lift, covered with a car cover. I've been looking on my computer and can't find the pictures I took of it when I bought it. It was so long ago, they were probably on 35mm. Sorry. Looks like I have another thing on my to-do list for...

    Urethane front bumper

There is a special primer and paint that's used on urethane bumpers that allows a little flex, but I can't remember what it's called or who makes it. The early 70's saw these bumpers on our cars, Firebirds, etc. Talk to your body guy or paint shop and they'll probably know what it is. I can tell...

    Odd Color Combos

How about the one and only '71 Mustang with Black exterior and Red Vermillion Random Stripe interior? It looks like red plaid. That would be my Boss 351. I'm not the original owner, but I certainly wished it was something different.

Car wont turn over unless u jump the solenoid It's a 67 cougar though

My apologies. I didn't have one in front of me to look at, and misspoke. Steve

    Bumper Stickers

Right after my divorce I bought a bumper sticker that said "I got a gun for my wife. Best trade I ever made". Steve

Car wont turn over unless u jump the solenoid It's a 67 cougar though

I would start troubleshooting by making sure that the Red/Blue stripe wire is on the "I" terminal of the starter solenoid, closest to the battery, and that it has 0 volts when the key is off and 12V when the key is turned on. Disconnect the wire from the solenoid when doing the voltage test. Steve

    Early 1971 (Aug 70) differences?

The hardware holding the brackets doesn't look like what Ford would use, and I can't believe they would put a bracket somewhere held by only one bolt, and no way to keep the bracket from moving. I would guess mounts for some sort of aftermarket Monte Carlo bar. Steve

    How rare

For 1971, out of 149,682 Mustangs (83,108 hardtop), there were 6578 with rear defrost (2857 hardtop), according to Marti's Mustang by the numbers. Steve

    Rear Suspension Staggered Shocks Question

It's a formed piece of sheet metal that's welded to the bottom of the floor. There is also an oblong opening in the floor with a rubber cap so you can access the top nut, but that might be in all cars. You would have to find a car being parted out that had it and cut it out to obtain the correct...

    1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Q code engine - $16500

I had a '72 Mach 1 that had the chrome trim with black below it. I bought it in '76, so pretty sure it was original.  Steve

    '71 vert in Vancouver, WA

I think I would want all the parts with the car before I bought it, not waiting until after it sold and hoping I got them and they were usable. Steve

1971 FMX Transmission Hesitates Shifting Into 3rd

Check your shifter linkage adjustment. If it's off a little, and you're pulling back on the shifter when you shift manually, it might be holding it from going into 3rd. Steve

I think you should give it a CD, seeing as you're a "Loud Guitarist".   :whistling: https://archive.org/details/gd1971-04-27.sbd.boswell.smith.114094.flac16 Steve

    Boss 351 Craiglist ad

It was previously mentioned here as well. I remember the car because I questioned the steam only coming from the right (only?) exhaust. https://www.7173mustangs.com/thread-1971-boss-351-in-rochester-ny? Steve

351 Cleveland Oil Restrictors – 351C Oiling Fix

Conventional wisdom back in the 70's and 80's was that Ford put extra oiling in the top end to make the engine quieter for Grandma. When I was weekend racing, I had the oil restrictors installed and ran a high volume oil pump with high pressure spring. I wanted more oiling in the bottom end...

Sound off 10-4 if you put CB in yours

I had one in my '72 Mach 1 back in the early 80's. Pulled it out when it stopped being my daily driver. My handle was "Speed Demon" after the Deep Purple song. I had no idea it also had a drug connotation when I picked it, but then, I was just an innocent farm kid. Steve

Dual Exhaust instead of Single Exhaust by 351 2V

I'm not one of the experts, but I believe the single exhaust was standard on all in '73 except for the 351-4V "Q" code. Probably anything could have been special ordered, but you'd need documentation to prove it. On the wheels, I believe the only option was the slotted mags. Mine is just the...
