    Rear gearing question

I agree with Hemikiller. I had a '69 vintage 4v 429 with 10.5:1cr in my Mach1 with 3.50:1 rear end & wide ratio toploader. It had a mild cam & small amount of porting. Suppose it still made around the stock 480 lbs.ft torque, overall multiplication in first was 3.5 x 2.78 = 9.73, 9.73 x 480 =...

    Can I run without these

Many years ago, just after I acquired my Mach1, I replaced the rocker arm bolts with the Crane stud conversion kit which did not come with deflectors. The factory ones don't fit as the top side of the studs are 7/16". I was a bit concerned but I'd seen something in HRM saying that if you had...

    71 72 Mach 1 Front Bumper

I'm sure there was one available but it was probably 10+ years ago. Just checked US Body, they do a rear one, complete front ends for race cars & also hoods.

    71 72 Mach 1 Front Bumper

It's a great idea as especially for the 72 it would save quite a lot of front end weight.

    71 72 Mach 1 Front Bumper

There is already one available for the 73!

    1973 351C 164hp/4000rpm ?

As Ron has expressed, it may be lower than you would expect. On the other hand I would think that no matter how restricted the engine is, by compression etc, it will make more hp at 5000 or 5500rpm than 4000. So it may not be the whole truth.

    Suspension upgrade recommendations

A question - has anyone installed a Panhard rod on the rear axle? I guess it's tricky with dual exhausts, but I would think it would deliver a lot more stability in the corners. I say this because I used to have a European Ford Capri MkIII (1980s) which was lowered a bit, all poly bushings up...

A good read on motor oil

For what it's worth, I have been reading 540-RATs blog for a number of years. I went with his current king of the film strength oil when I refreshed my 351C & added a Lunati solid lifter cam & followers. At the time, 4 years ago, top for wear protection was Amsoil Signature Series 5w-30. I'm...

    73 Brake Jam

Possibly not a brake issue but suspension? If strut rod bushing is gone on the right, the wheel will move backwards under braking & give the same effect. You could test for even brake application by jacking up front, 1 person progressively applies brakes while the other checks torque required...

    Crankcase venting alternatives - thoughts

That sounds like quite a good idea. David Vizard discusses oil drainback & crankcase pressure a bit in his big block Chevy book & he states that if you run oil drainback lines from the heads to the pan they need to be about 3/4" bore because of the air/fumes would go upwards in them. Obviously...

1972 Mach Original Tires , Wheels , Trim Rings , Hubcaps

I have a set of hubcaps & trim rings from the 14" wheels originally on my '72 Mach1. The previous owner bought some 15" Magnums then threw away the wheels because they were rusty but kept the caps & trims 'in case'. I'm happy to let them go, only problem is I am in England (would say UK but it...

    Suspension upgrade recommendations

The Shelby drop is not essential on 71-73 cars like it is on 65-70. Ford did actually fix the suspension geometry for us in 71 so there is no camber gain or loss on suspension travel. I didn't know this, dropped my arms 1 3/4", ended up with a lower front end, much less suspension travel...

Mach 1 with 460 takes too much gasoline!

Your vacuum seems very low? Do you have a Lambda (Oxygen)sensor and Air-Fuel Ratio gauge on the car? Driving at low speed you are not actually on the main jets, you are running on the idle mixture from the transition slots. Perhaps this is way too rich? I have noticed on my 351C with a...

    Hood scoops 71 Mach 1

When I first had my car I removed the bungs. The engine used to breathe oil fumes & I found at low speed sometimes visible smoke came OUT of the scoops. Also I was inhaling it via the vent system inside the car - yuk! Eventually I got a plenum, the repro interconnecting ducts without doors...

    Muffler hanger

I welded bolts onto my mufflers in place of the bosses. I welded the heads on with the threads sticking out so they worked like studs. I can't get any pictures at the moment.

    15 " X 10 " Magnum 500 wheels

I put some repro 15 x 10 Magnums on my 72 Mach1 4 years ago with Hoosier Quick Times on for racing. I believe they were WVs but I'm not sure. They have a 5" backspace (just checked) which was not enough as the outside of the tire was close enough to the wheel well just inside the arch that I...

Interesting overview of the Cleveland oiling system

It does seem that this guy has pinpointed the actual problem that led to spun rod bearings ie the crank oil passages not delivering oil pressure to the rod at the right time in the stroke. It never occured to me & obviously a lot of other people that the oil supply was not a steady stream but...

Precipitous drop in oil pressure at idle

My newly rebuilt bottom end was giving me symptoms like this on 5w-30 (Amsoil Signature, one of the best film strength oils you can buy). I have a mechanical gauge as the electric is just too slow for safety. I had asked my builder about sleeving the lifter bores but he thought it was...

Distributor gear roll pin. Need some expert guidance.

George Pence has previously advised that a second roll pin be installed on any performance build where higher oil pressure is generated eg by shimming the relief valve (for 90psi) and/or using a hv pump. I use a hv pump because I run 5w-30 synthetic & the lifter bores are worn. I'm happy on one...

Differential rebuild; any "while you're at it..." useful suggestions?

That's what I did to mine & I'm very happy with the torque biasing diff, much better on the road than a traction-loc (limited slip) or open diff. I'm not convinced the 31 splines are necessary for the road but I wanted to take mine on the strip with a 429 & Quick Times.
