    Lateral play in rear axle

Hi, today when I re-adjusted my Koni shocks on the rear end I noticed that I could lateraly move my RH rear wheel slightly in and out. Although I didn't measure it, I think the play is less that or equal to .02 inch. There is no movement on the LH side. Is this play excessive? Thanks, Manfred

Oil pressure sending unit thread size

Hi, anyone know the thread size of the oil pressure sending unit in a 351 Cleveland? I want to temporarily install a mechanical gauge. And, yes, I used the search feature, but it seems I'm missing the right keywords ;-) Thanks, Manfred

    Extending seat tracks back

Hi, sitting in the drivers seat of my '71 I always have the feeling that it would be grat if I could move the seat another 2 or 3 inches away from the steering wheel. Ripped steering coupler / My steering column is too short!!!

Hi, as odd as it may seem I have ripped my steering coupler apart. During re-assembly of my Mach 1, I installed a brand new coupler (the rubber ring). Deeper looking into the cause of the problem I noticed that the fingers/dowels on the column side DO NOT engage with the notches on the...

    DIY steering adjustment

Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible to successfully align the steering using common garage tools. I don't want to spare the money, but I'm really unsure whether today’s alignment services get mit done right, especially here in Germany. I have replaced all steering components during the...

Procedure to adjust Saginaw power steering gear

Hi, in the shop manual I've read about the recommended procedure to adjust the Saginaw power steering gear. It involves removing the pitman arm and emptying the fluid from the gear. Is there a way to avoid disconnecting the fluid line? I hate the idea to end up with a leaking line. On the...

    Replacing inside rear view mirror

Hi, my inside rear view mirror has become blind after 40+ years. As I see it I have the following options: 1. Buy a replacement from any of the usual vendors. However, there seems to be no exact replacement for the original. 2. Have a new mirror glass cut locally. This has the disadvantage...

    Accel distributor advance curve

Hi, as of now, I have an Accel 34000V distributor installed in my 351C-4V. I'm trying to learn about ignition timing (the general concepts are understood). Looking at the original Ford specs in the shop manual, the mechanical advance curve is 28 crankshaft degrees @ 2300 rpm. The Accel...

    V8

V8 You may not know the plants, but most of you have consumed quite a bit of them. This is how hop is grown, the stuff that goes into beer. Actually I was quite under pressure to get that picture. The Mustang was still missing the side stipes which I managed to get installed last week. And...

Who is best in clock repair?

Hello, I need to get the center console clock of my '71 Mach 1 repaired. I'm not sure whether I should go for a repair of the mechanical movement or have a quartz movement installed, but I tend to the latter because of battery drain during longer storage periods and reliability. I have found...

Any secret tips for Rear Window Molding installation

Hi, I'm looking for tips on how to install the moldings of my rear window ('71 Mach 1). The last time I attempted this ended with some bent and dented moldings. I've ordered a new set of hopefully better quality this time (NPD), and I want to avoid damaging them again. My problem seems to be...

Need picture of exhaust heat shield of '71 351C-4V

Hi, does anyone happen to have a picture of the correct exhaust heat shield for a 1971 351C-4V? What I mean is the the part that is attached to the passenger side exhaust manifold and is connected to the air cleaner snorkel via a hose, providing heated air during warm up. Mine is long gone and...

    Holley Vacuum Secondaries opening

Hi, today I've checked if the vacuum secodaries of my Holley 600 cfm 1460 do open. What I found is that during a test run in fourth gear up to 4000 rpm (~90 mph), they opened half way. Is this what I should expect from a correctly tuned carburetor or should I go for a lighter spring (higher...

Routing of radiator overflow hose on '71 351C

Dear all, this question is about the correct routing of the radiator overflow hose that is attached near the radiator cap. Currently, mine is just dangling down the side of the radiator and not affixed at all. I went to my prefered source for pictures in such situations (the 71 429 CJ Mustang...

    Glossy or flat side stripes???

Hi all, I know that a week ago, there was already a thread about side stripes. Apparently, stripes are sold in glossy and in flat finish. I have my hood and rocker blackouts painted in (semi) flat black. The stripe kit I have purchased years ago is glossy (yet to be installed). In what finish...

    Cracks developing around hood fasteners

Hi, The paint on my '71 Mach 1 is perfect except one thing: on the NACA hood, cracks are developing around the twist lock hood fasteners. The cracks are mostly radial and 1/2-1 inch long. I have made sure the fastener inserts are not binding in the hood cutout/opening and that the fasteners...

    1971 Mach 1 Grille - what do I need?

Hi all, finishing off the restoration (OK, I know it's never done ;-), one of the last things is to return my grille to the 1971 mach 1 style. Someone in the past has replaced the grille with a 1973 (see picture below taken before restoration). It currently has vertically oriented sport lamps...
