R134 is not as efficient as R12. It requires a larger condenser and evaporator to match the cooling power of R12.
Duracool is a propane based refrigerant that is more efficient than R12, and has been approved by most countries. The US hasn't approved it because of volatility concerns in motor vehicles (that pack around a tankful of highly volatile and explosive gasoline). David (Carolina_Mountain_Mustangs) has tried it and really likes it. Individuals can order it directly online. You can read more about it here:

My recommendation is to not use those types. There is a reason for their non-approval:

It did not take too long to discover; we did not want the responsibility or liability of propane-based refrigerants. I chose to apply the same caution to cars, as I had several people wanting help with the conversions. It is only my opinion to stay with 134 for acceptable results or go with a redesigned retrofit system.
The increased capacity of the new systems should provide proper cooling. However, I have read on-line where some are not as happy about their performance as expected. The one I have posted, I have seen no feedback on, thus the request for feedback. Keep in mind however, the issue may be an installer problem and not a system problem.
