M & Q code engines used the multi-groove. 71 & 72 R-code engines used single groove.

Regardless, I recommend you put multi-groove valves in the trash unless it's a stock rebuild, and get a good set of one piece stainless valves with single grooves.

What would be a good set of single groove replacement valves that would work on the “m” code heads?

I agree completely. I've had two multi groove valve engines that have dropped a valve when a keeper let go, one a 289 and the other in the Cleveland that was in my car when I bought it. Manley and Ferrea valves are good quality valves.

Agree with Don, Manley or Ferrea. I'm using Ferrea 5000 series in my new 4V engine, part # F5045 exhaust, F5037 intake. They sell for about $240/set of 16 currently. Best price I've found is through Barnett Performance.

Manley makes their Severe Duty and Race Master valves.

Competition Products (Howards Cams) has reasonably priced valves for the 4V heads

For the cam, I'd talk to the guys at Bullet or Schneider. Lots of issues with flat tappet lifter failures these days.
