Thanks, maybe my PO filled in the holes before they had it painted.According to my Source (Mustang Recognition Guide 1964 - 1973), ALL 1971 Mustang Convertibles and Coupes had the word M U S T A N G in block letters stretched widely spaced across the rear of the deck lids.
The 1971 Mustang Sportsroof models had the word M U S T A N G centered on the deck lid.
Hope this helps.

My 73 just has the script in the right corner

I'll have to fix that!
Well like many on here - Chuck is FULL OF good advice and helpful info! Glad you choose to share your knowledge with us!It may be false recollection but, I think I remember seeing a decal stripe, including the fender extensions, that had "MUSTANG" in hollow letters (the letters were cut out and body color was shown). Perhaps it was only in a brochure and never made it to production or only on early fastbacks. Or I'm full of it. Chuck
I don't have a 71 car or trunk lid. I have several trunks but none have the MUSTANG letters. I believe the reason nobody is responding is if they have a complete car it is not easy to get the letters back out of the spring tubes they install into. Now if someone had a car in restoration with the letters off it would be easy. Be patient and keep asking.Anyone?
